Hi

Anyone own one?

Common faults, opinions, what to look for?

Cheers.

Oil sight glass in the wrong place on earlier models.

Ideally you want better suspension, that's about it I think......

Haven't owned, or infact ridden one, though have ridden a TL-R.

I'd go with another owner's (another racer) opinion "not all their cracked up to be, I'd take my J model ZX6 out for fun anyday".
But then I have a well known dislike of twins.

Am still tempted to get one for a fairly boring 'get to work bike' some day.

I believe the earlier models with the rotary rear suspension were dubbed the "Widowmaker" Thumbs Up

Not ridden one however....though my mate rides a TL1000R. And he loves that, and it still has that rotary suspension methinks. He doesnt seem to have a massive problem with it *shrugs*

You'll need a keen eye for picking up a second hand one, sometimes can be a well used, nutters tool.

Fork seals
Bearings
Calipers
Head stock
etc...

A guy at work has one with welded VTR cans on it, never heard a TL-S like it, ever. Maybe it's the way he rides it, but it actually freaks me out. Confused

You need to go for an early S to get the full power engine, later ones have dropped power, as has the R. However this ‘R’ model was lightly tuned – filter, full system and fuelling setup to suit.

This one did have Ohlins shock and fork internals as well as steering damper.

As with any twin, it needs to be revved to make properly decent progress, yet doesn’t seem to reward as much when you do.
It’s far from light and does feel a bit barge-like in handling compared to a bit sportier bikes. With the Ohlins stuff it seemed pretty stable, which some consider to be a good thing; but then some consider cruisers to be a good thing Razz (admittedly a bit more stability would be useful on my 675, though).
The power does come in fairly strong from mid revs, but feels more train-like than my slightly-trick zx9 which feels a bit more ‘lively’ (and has about an extra 20hp on top as well as maybe 30kg less, so not too surprising).

Just make sure it was recalled under warranty. I'm sure there were a few recalls made, one of which was to replace the frame. IIRC the damper not only contributed to a nasty tank-slapping tendancy, but also cracked the frame. Can anyone confirm this? Im fairly certain but not 100% sure.

One of the mechanics at work has got a '97 model that he bought new, it's still going strong as his summer commuter bike 50-odd thousand miles later. He's replaced the suspension with Ohlins kit and reckons that you do need to ditch the rotary damper. His is kicking out around 120rwhp, thats with a full akra system, power commander and a filter.

They were recalled to be fitted with a steering damper, later models came with them as standard. One of the mags tested an early one a couple of months ago and they said that they're actually pretty tame compared to the modern thou's.

The rear damper is rubbish, as is the standard steering damper. They never recalled for the frame, although only a handful cracked. The point to check is where the spring of the seperate pre-load damper mounts, on the right hand side at the rear.

The engine is a good 'un and less 'twin-like' than a lot of other twins, rewarding revs as opposed to midrange. They were torque limited (by way of the ignition) in the first three gears, you can buy a tre (timing retard eliminator) to remove this but it's basically a 15 ohm resistor.

I quite liked the one my ex had and I don't like twins, as a rule. It reached it's limit much sooner than my Blade though, knee down felt lively, although that was from the reart and was almost certainly that damper.

I'd have one as a wheelie bike but not as a first bike.

Cheers

Grim

Pfft

I've a very short attention span.

Not done with the Gsxr yet. There was someone interested in a swap and was weighing up my options.

Ridden an SRAD 750 and a TLS. I'd take the GSXR every time.

TLS was a bit tame and dissapointing tbh. I was expecting a bike that was a mental handful. Feel's like all 1000cc twins I've ridden, deceptively quick but quite boring.

I have to agree with G! Mad

I was talking about getting one not long ago. According to a reliable source though i havn't had chance to ride either myself, the TLS is faster and more aggressive then a 996 on the power delivery. Sounds like an excellent fun ride to me.

Somewhat more than "a handful". In the US they are hard to find owing to Suzuki *alledgedly* buying them up & *making them disappear". Neighbor had one that went thru 3 frames in less than a year. Suzuki paid him enough to allow him to buy a brand new fully optioned G'Wing... Affadavits were signed & he legally can't own another Suzuki in this lifetime.... he unwittingly left the paperwork on the coffee table while I was over there...

The rotary damper was never changed. It was rotary from the start of the TL-S' life until the end.

They fitted cheapo steering dampers to try and cure the slapping.

Quite correct Thumbs Up Suzuki being Suzuki, they decided not to bother re-engineering the suspension and sorting it properly, so they just bodged it instead!

Quite believable.

Remember the Hayabusa subframe 'issues' a few years ago?

Nah, it didn't show any evidence of poor weather riding, just the paint finish and corrosion in some places, even the undertray was spotlessly clean.

Is a good enough bike, just I can't believe the finish.
