Got my insurance docs through today, wondered why the quote was so cheap, muppet has put down excluding commuting, and me as a member of the IAM, even though I explicity told him I wasn't.

So can't ride into work tomorrow morning, PITA.

Just ring up and tell them they put some details wrong on the paperwork, no commuting when there should be and IAM where the shouldn't be. Just say it as if it's just a clerical error you want fixing and they should just say ok, i've sorted that and will send replacements out no charge, always works for me.

Works with mileage too, if you want to increase you limit they seem to change it for free afterwards if you make out it's been an admin error, but if you increase your mileage in the quote it boosts your premium a lot, did this when I insured the Pontiac. They wanted an extra £200 if I insured it for 10k per year rather than 7.5k, so I insured it for 7.5 then 3 weeks later rang up and got it changed to 10K for free because it was an error.... Laughing

I've done that myself before after it first happening as an honest mistake. They only had me down for a 1000 miles for some strange reason, so I phoned them and told them that they'd missed a zero off and they changed it without question.

Well my previous best quote was £700, and they've honoured the price of £290 even though it blatently should be well more.

Thumbs up to MCE, someone's getting fired today tho I think Very Happy

MCE Did the exact same thing to me. They did offer me £200 off the insurance I should have had though so it did work out in the end. Plus they offer cheaper than anyone else I've ever been with... but that's 3 years in a row they've messed up and each time they offer me a deal... ooops.

the company changed my details in order to get me a cheaper quote, i gave them all my details, they confirmed it, then they said they'd phone back in a minute to see if they can get it cheaper.

phoned backed and said it was all done, sent through the paper copy and some details had been changed, phoned up and they said it was ok :S apparently they do that sometimes to get you a cheaper quote.

Phoned them up to recall the quote, Number wasnt recognized but i gave them my details again and they offered me a quote of £650, So i told them where to stick it Evil or Very Mad

Was especially pissed off as i was going to be buying some stainless headers for it, Had a feeling i should wait a few days - Turns out i need the cash for Insurance Rolling Eyes

might have been a one off, but maybe they know their staff are pulling these tricks, and it reduces their costs.

I bet most people never find out, so they dont mind rectifying the ones that get spotted.

I dont know what would happen if someone were to have an accident.

Surely in the case of it coming to light due to an incident/accident the call of sale would be used to verify the customer gave the right details, or would it 'be lost'?

If you are adamant that you told them differently to what they have provided then ring them up and kick off. Many companies now have telephone voice recording and they can go back and listen to the advisor accepting the quote. Make sure you tell them you want you complaint logged and details of the FSA complaints procedure enclosed with their response (they have to send it anyway but will show you mean business)

I recently done this and got £50 as a gesture of goodwill along with the cover I should have had at no extra charge.

Thumbs Up

yeah they probably keep phone records for a fair while, maybe even a year.

i guess the person who loses out will be the underwriter, as they are covering a higher risk person than they realise, for the price of someone safer

Does anyone else think the inclusing/excluding commuting is a bit of a con? Why should you have to pay more to use your bike to get to work and back? My mum doesn't pay more to use her car to get to work and back.

some people only have a bike as an occasional weekend toy

i think it makes sense that they pay less thatn someone who rides their bike everyday

i may get a car at some point and it would only be for occasional use, so id get an old one and have it on a classic car policy which would be for recreational use only, not business or commuting. I've looked at prices and its about a third or less, which makes sense, as i wdnt use it often

I understand that but why can't everyone just pay the lower price? I commute but I did not include commuting in my insurance policy as it was another £50. The insurance policy should be made up of how many miles you do, not why you are doing them.

It's just another way of insurance companies taking money away from us.

Surely, someone who rides their motorcycle everyday would be more skilled than a Fairweather rider and thus more safe...

Maybe adding the annual mileage to the equation as well, so a lower annual mileage = a shorter route to work and back = less risk = less premium.

Question

My Pontiac is insured with MCE too, but they didn't actually put anything down wrong on my policy, they just got told they did Smile They have tried to screw me many years ago for something else but endless phonecalls to managers got it sorted, wasn't a clerical error was them being devious lying gits.

different factors indicate different levels of risk. If you want to lie and say that you dont commute, and save yourself £50, fine, and you probably wont get caught out.

But you are lieing to save yourself money. In the same way you could lie about anything else that would get you a lower quote. These things lower your quote because statistically they have been found to be associated with higher risk.

A salesman might be a higher risk type individual on average than a teacher. Some salesmen may drive more safely than some teachers, but it still makes sense for the insurance company to discriminate based on job type.

Commuting is often done in traffic where people are running late and not taking as much care as they should, so i wouldnt be surprised if commuting was more dangerous per mile than nipping into the countryside at weekends.

Ebike dont give you the option as they automatically include commuting in with the price on fully comp, which is okay for me as that what i use my bike for aswell

Well there are two sides to that coin. One could argue that as you are on the road more your intrinsic risk is going to increase as the odds of avoiding an accident decrease the more time you can potentially have an accident!

Having said that, the man from Carole Nash used the fact I ride alot and had already clocked up over 1000 miles in the first month (Pay as you go insurance for a month why my no claims hit 1 year) of owning my bike before I got it insured as assurance that I wasn't as inexperienced as I may have appeared on paper. He then proceeded to knock £500 off the quote they had initially given me (to match another companies offer) and then chucked in interest free installments Very Happy

Speaking of Carol Nash, I currently have my ZXR insured with them and decided to do an online quote for the 916.

It came in at £277 fully comp, but I closed the window by accident! So, went through the process again, everything exactly the same but this time the quote came back from a different underwriter as £144. Needless to say I nearly choked on my cuppa tea and quickly went ahead and brought it!!

Now why they didn't give me that quote in the first place puzzles me! Confused

Thumbs Up

Still take a bit of work to beat what I had.
About three months into my policy I received new document. I thought this was odd. When I looked they were for someone with a different name, address, bike, everything. But now I know Mr Smith doesn’t have any security in his garage but does have a nice 07 reg cbf600. I called the company involved and they didn’t seam that bothered just said to put the documents in the bin!
