Im trying to take my crankcase bearings out but they don't seem to want to budge.

Ive tryed heating them up but no luck. Its hard to get behind them and knock them out.

Is it best to take it to the shop and get it done?

Or you have any neat tricks to get them out?

Thanks

Have you any pictures, people need them to evaluate just what you are doing, as it stands it sounds as though you are heating them instead of the surrounding casing, is that correct?-Jockey.

No reason why it shouldn't come out. I would make a stepped drift to press it out from outside. If you have a socket that will fit through the hole in the casing and catch on the inner race, you might be able to use that as a drive. Probably will have to sacrifice the seal, better yet remove it first if possible.

The inner race is like inline with the case so i doubt a socket will get on it. I dont mind about the seal really i will take it out tomorrow and see how it goes.

You are not using enough heat.

Put the whole thing in the oven and leave it there until it is fearsomely hot.

The bearings will probably fall out by themselves (listen for the clunk from the oven), if they don't, gentle tapping with a drift should persuade them out.

Remember to wear thick leather gloves to handle them. Welding gloves are ideal.

I was doing the reverse of that job this weekend. Cases in the oven, bearings in the freezer. Didn't even need my hammer, they dropped right into place. Note leather gloves, hammer and socket and extension bar "drift" on standby.

EDIT: Remember to remove any circlips. Wink

Having had more than enough hassles from blind bearing removal lately, particularly in places where you are forced to work, underside of a van etc.

You cannot beat having the proper tool, ask around or think about renting a blind bearing puller with slide hammer.

Yes, they might all come out. You can put them back in again though.

Incidentally, I can even see from your photo that if you remove the seal, you'll be able to see both the inner race and the balls. Plenty of room to get a drift on there, as said, a big 1/2" drive socket is usually ideal. And plenty of heat.

Do it when she's out. Really. Clean the oven out afterwards. Mums just don't understand.
