Im pretty sure they just make the bike run slightly rich. You will be better off with a powercommanded to be honest (If your bike is fuel injected)

My thoughts exactly.
On the subject of Power Commanders, would having a Power Commander have the same end result as just getting the bike set up properly at a garage (through the ECU etc), or would having a Power Commander give me extra power on top of it just being set up right for the can & filter? ____________________ Yamaha TDR 125 ~ Suzuki RG 125 ~ Aprilia RS 125 ~ Suzuki GSXR 600 K4 ~ 2001 Aprilia RSV 1000R (breaking for parts. Hi
That thing will just screw around with the signals from a couple of sensors and richen the mixture. Might give you a tiny bit of power if the bike is running a tad lean. Suspect the only way you could get 25hp would be claiming 0.25hp at 100rpm, 0.25hp at 200rpm, etc, and then adding all those together.
As to a power commander it allows you to screw around with the signals to and from the ecu, giving an effect very close to remapping the ecu. Most ecus cannot easily be remapped properly although some can (such as most Triumph ones).
All the best

Ok, a couple of misunderstandings there. First off, you need to set up a power commander at a garage on a dyno. Secondly, the power commander goes in between the ECU, the sensors and the injectors to fool the ECU into thinking it is running normally while telling the injectors to give more fuel. This is done across the rev range, and on a power commander is sampled every 500rpm. On the Sagem fuel injection fitted to most Triumphs (and some Aprilias) the sampling is done every 250rpm, and they can be re-mapped. There is no point buying a power commander if the stock ECU can be remapped, especially if the stock ECU does more samples than a power commander. You'll get a MUCH better result with a re mapped ecu, than you will with one that is being fooled into doing something that it shouldn't.
However, that relies on the fact that your ECU is re mappable at all. If it isn't then a power commander is the best way to go. Either way you'll need some dyno time with a dyno operator that can either use the power commander equipment, or has the right tools for re-mapping your injection (Like the Triumph injection 'gameboy' or aftermarket software such as 'tune boy').
Its not as simple as bolting on a box to make your bike go faster. If it was, everyone would do it. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Yeah it just alters the IAT sensor value to add more fuel. Same can be done with the barometric pressure sensor.
Some cheap nitrous kits point the nitrous jet at the IAT sensor to chill it so that the ECU adds fuel in to compensate for the gas. A good way to eventually melt your engine ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

There are a handful of EPROM chips that alter the igition timing, so when used with a power commander would give you more power.
You also have to consider that the map on the EPROM is designed to work with all mille's with various mods, whereas a PCIII is a bespoke solution and gives optimum performance to your bike and your bike alone.
IMO forget the EPROM crap and just PCIII it. I got 119 out of my 02 mille with a PCIII and Aprilia Race can. ____________________ My Flickr |

Goat-Boy I think has chipped his car and gotten more go out of it. I've the same engine block (resplendant with new head gasket, turbo, pistons and con-rods after the turbo exploded and trollied the engine) so I was thinking of getting it done. Not cheap though...
I was outside at lunchtime yesterday and two blokes were stood around a black CBR600RR with the seat off and a laptop plugged into the power commander box, adjusting the fueling/timings..

Thanks for all the replies.
I defo wont bother with the chip, sounds like it may have more cons than it lets on! I suspected as much mind seeing as its only £20 or less.
I'll see what happens after the garage take a look at it & re-map it. They were pretty confident that it'd give me a noticable increase in power (and no flat spots). I'm also going a tooth down on the front sprocket so that should make her a bit nippier too! I'm not particularly fussed about breaking the sound barrier, so I'd rather have better acceleration with a lower top speed.
Cheers! ____________________ Yamaha TDR 125 ~ Suzuki RG 125 ~ Aprilia RS 125 ~ Suzuki GSXR 600 K4 ~ 2001 Aprilia RSV 1000R (breaking for parts. Interested??) ~ Dajiang X-Stream X-Dirt 200 (stolen) ~ Suzuki DRZ400E (Stolen) ~ CCM 604E R30.... |
