i recently had a problem with my 2000 honda xr100. the bike does not start in less i jump start it, and when it starts it only runs for a about 2 minutes at idle. and about 20 seconds seconds when in 5th gear. the bike ran fine before once i just shut it off and now it has this problem. i had this problem once before but i turned up the idle srew and it was fine then. i took the drain screw of and turned the gas on and it came out fine. also i have oil on the pplug and blue smoke but that was there a while so its probly just the rings or something. so can someone please telll me why its only runing this long!

Sounds like fuel starvation mate. I had a similiar problem with my Viffer. What I'd done was replace the pipes from the fuel tap with new pipes (stiff with being new). And I'd cut them slightly longer so the one pipe that I hadn't replaced was kinked.

this all mean that I could bump the bike and it'd start and run for a bit but I'd be riding along and come to stop at a roundabout or junction and it would cut out regardless of whether the clutch was in or out.

Basically the engine will be able to pull the fuel through a kinked pipe (because of vacuum created by engine) but when you slow down or whatever the vacuum lessens and the pipe closes up.

Dunno if any of that helps but its worth checking.

If the plug is oily and there is blue smoke then that is bad.

You say it like the rings are a part that you dont need. If the rings are worn that bad, it will run like a dog if at all.

i no the rings are bad and it will wreck the egine if i leave it to long. but it cost me alot to replae the rings and if there is something else wroung that might be really bad then i might not want to keep the bike. im going to replace the rings my self for the firist time so if any one has any tips on doing it and and what kind of tools i need to bye it would be nice to tell me. if i did not already tell u my bike is a 2000 honda xr100, SOHC, single cilender. four stoke. and its an off road bike that i bought for only 200. u plrobly see me on this site alot but becouse my bike is not to great. also im only 14 years old. any how these are the tools i think i need to replace the rings: shop manual for my bike, feeler gage for the valves (which i think i need) do i need to take the valves train apart? maybe some thing to put the rings on?. maybe a flex hone. and do you think i need a new pistin to or just rings? and any more toools do u think i need? any how back to the egine running for only 2 mins. it seems it only runs like 10 seconds now. and any more suggetens on the bike running for only 1o seconds? sorrry i wrote so long.

Just buy a honda cg haynes book, it's pretty much the same engine. or even better, try and get one for that bike. If you've never done this before, it is a must. When you start you should give the engine a good clean first, it stops bits getting into the engine. Don't forget to drain the oil first.

The tools you will need are;

a decent socket set,
a pair of snipe nose pliers,
possibly a cross head screwdriver.

You will also need a top end gasket kit, piston and rings, pin and circlips. DO NOT use the old circlips on the new piston, it could destroy your engine if they get deformed when you remove them.

Like i say, the haynes book will explain it better.

hope this helps. Thumbs Up

If you take the barrel to a bike shop, they should advise you if you need a oversize piston or not.

cleaning the carb may help, but if its burning as muck oil as you say it is, it wont help as oil will make it bog down and clog up.

The haynes manual goes into a lot more detail than a owners manual. Plus there is propper pictures not just a bit of a diagram.

check the tank vent, a small motor wont drag through much fuel and it could take that long to cause a vacuum in the tank

do you get a hissing sound if the filler is opened after it cuts out?
