Hi guys,

Bike is a ZX6-R J1 (2000)

Just changed the oil and filter, and now the oil light wont go out...

Ive checked and checked and checked the level on the flat, run the engine up and then let it cool down...taken it for a short ride around camp... and still it wont go out..

If the level is correct what am i missing?

Its not oil level its oil pressure. Check the oil pressure sender as it may be faulty, that's the usual cause. DON'T ride it until you have found the cause though as if its the oil pump you will damage the engine.

Did you do up the filter properly? And is the level definitely correct?

And yes, it could be the sender, but as said before. Don't ride it until you find the problem!

I did up the filter as tight as possible by hand...this was with locked arms with all my weight on it, so it is tight...the level has been checked by two people on the flat and its just below the full mark in the window...

Im downloading a manual now but i dont know how i could tell if the sender is fooked? or indeed where it is?

The manual holds the key to that one.

Something similar happened to my Dad's transalp. He got it checked by the garage and they decided it was a fault sensor. Fingers crossed eh!

STOP!!

I can't believe no one on here knows about this, it's a common glitch.

When you change the oil on the zZX6's you need to leave the filter just a tad loose & crank the engine until oil spurts out, then screw the filter on tight.

Altho now that you have ridden it around with no oil pressure you've probably fucked the crank/rod bearings.

I have heard that you need to fill the filter with oil before screwing it on or as mentioned crank it over at slow speed till its full then check the level again, not sure if this applies to all ZXRs but I did this on my 400 just in case.

Hope you work it out.

I was under the impression it's good practice to do this with all bikes? At least I always have......

I've never ever heard of this in my 16 years of working on engines. I've never done this and never had a problem. Filling the oil filter with oil will do nothing at all. It will however cause a bit of a mess when you come to screw it in place when all the oil spills out, as the majority of filters screw in side on.

The filters will fill with oil when you put the oil in the normal way. If you want to check this, put oil in without the filter on and watch it all spill out again!! Laughing

After replacing the filter and oil, turn the engine over without letting it fire (remove the plug caps) until the oil light goes out.

Job done. Thumbs Up

I have never done it either, the only oil that touches the filter when its being fitted is on the rubber O ring to make it easier to remove next time its changed.

ZRX61 is right you have to prime the system like he says. If the bike has had any load put on it whatsoever though (like riding it around camp), you're looking at bearing damage.

You don't have to, just run the engine until the oil pressure light goes out. Been doing it for 20 years without any engine troubles. Wink

It's a problem particular to the model. Oil pressure switches usually activate at around 10psi, so if he's ridden the bike with the light on it's likely there wasn't enough pressure to prevent bearing contact.
