ive just put new clutch plates and springs on my bike but now im trying to refit the cable when i locate the cable end into the clutch release arm at the engine end theres not enough free cable at the other end to attach it to the handlebar end adjuster. have i done something wrong or is it the wrong cable that was on.

Hi,
if you have fitted it correctly onto the little cam type thing, at clutch end, have you routed the cable correctly?
how much is it short by?
& where did you get the cable from & are you sure its the correct one?
most people seem to have bother getting it fitted at the engine end, lol
have you measured it against the old one?
cheers,
GAZ
EDIT - are you re-using the old cable? if so, you have definately fitted something wrong as the old cable will be stretched.

If its direct then there should be a barrel adjustor near where the cable clips into the engine end.

Does the clutch cable attach to the same side as the clutch?

OK googling reveals that an RS125 has a barrel adjustor on the engine end. Loosen this a bit until the cable can go back into the lever without undue effort. 2-4 mm play is what your after.

hi,
clutch cable goes into a hole in engine casing,
access to it is through a pull off plastic gearbox oil filler cap, slightly lower down from were cable enters.
it then hooks onto the cam.
sounds like the cable is incorrectly routed.
cheers,
GAZ.

hi,
youve lost me there?
barrel adjuster is on clutch lever at handle bar.
cable adjustment, at engine end is via " aprilia clutch adjustment tool" or using a socket (11 or 12mm iirc) held by molegrips, to hold/loosen lock nut & screwdriver, through centre of socket to loosen/tighten screw.
cheers,
GAZ

when i took the cable off the handlebar adjuster was all the way in so there was no freeplay at all. i had to take the clutch cover off to free it that way. would that suggest the previous fitter has fitted it the same way. its about 5-10mm short of being able to attach to the handlebars. as far as i can see its in place ok at the engine end...(not many places it can go really) and the cables sliding freely in its outer sleeve, just dont seem to be enough of it??????????????????????

OK its a pushrod type. Do that adjustment first and then see if the cable will fit.

hi,
the cable is a bit tricky to hook on & off through that wee hole, but taking the casing off is just plain cheating, lol.
nothing snagging on the cable, making it too short?
have you tried fitting it backwards?
loosen clutch lever assembly off & move a few mm towards centre of top yoke, then hook cable onto clutch lever, screw adjuster barrel all the way in, route cable straight down making sure its not snagged on anything, & then try & hook the other end onto the cam/plate thingie(while thats slackenned off a bit)?
are we talking really sort or just a few mm?
probably better off with a new cable anyway, perhaps the wrong cable was fitted, putting too much strain on the clutch release cam/puller?
as far as your manual goes, that sounds about right for adjusting a brand new cable,
but expect it to stretch a bit, especially in first few weeks, then your as well adjusting it the same way, rather than using the barrel adjuster on bar, as this doesnt give much adjustment & it does stretch a fair bit, then it settles down .
mind & leave a wee bit of free play at lever.
good luck!
cheers,
GAZ

hi,
NICE ONE!
knew it had to be something simple!
usually is on these bikes, just takes ages to find out & then you need impossibly small hands & fingers to get into the area that needs attention!
cheers,
GAZ
