Well, I've sold the 916 and will be on the look out for another track bike over the winter.

It will mainly be a track bike, but I would like the option of using it on the road every now and then.

I think I'll have approx £3k to spend, and dont want anything smaller than a 750. But really fancy a 1000 IL4 this time.

So far I've had a couple of ZXR750's and the 916 for track bikes. Fancy a little more 'oomph' now, as I was always getting passed on the straighs and held up in the corners! Sad

Any idea's lads & lasses?

Thumbs Up

Go in a faster group, if you're not in fast.
Get on the throttle earlier.
Wink

Personally, I'd say that once at a reasonable pace, it's only on the decently longer straights that anything over a 600 starts to get ahead of a modern 600.
My well used examples are lapping at Snetterton at the same pace as a few litre bikes on a 64hp SV and mid pack in fast group on the same SV at Brands Indy to manage the same lap times the weekend after with only 35hp with a carb issue!

I found racing the SV brought me on the most; it made me really try and make full use of the little I had available and be less worried about getting thrown off when pulling on the throttle.
While I find litre bikes tend to make you a bit more of a 'straight line hero', though lap times may fall initially - lots of mid range makes it a bit more concerning getting on the power coming of a corner.

If you're really stuck on the idea of a litre bike, then, well pretty much any of 'em once they've got sorted suspension, etc. Personally I tend to think fireblades are a bit over-priced and underpowered as stock.

I am.

I do try! Wink

Over the past few years I've found that I dont have a problem with cornering, or exiting them. It's when I get on the straights that Mr Straight Line Hero comes past and then proceeds to hold me up in the next few corners.

The 916 (with its 105bhp @ the wheel) was an awesome bike on the track. Its corner and exit speed's were very good, I could pull past litre bikes coming out of alot of corners (and pass a few on brakes going in), but into 3rd/4th gear they would be coming back past me as I just didn't have the power! Sad 750's I could cope with no problem, even though they had more power.

Ideally I would like a 998, 140+ at the wheel and tons of torque would be nice, but I'd never find one for £3k!

I was thinking maybe a SP1, as I do like the twins. But maybe a blade or Gix 1000. ????????

Just buy a 600 because then you have bragging rights when someone is slower on a big bike. "I just owned you and I'm only on a 600!"

You also have mitigation for when you get pwned by someone faster... "Well, I am *only* on a 600..."

Plus they are dirt cheap and plentiful, unlike large capacity track bikes...

Or get an ex Minitwin SV650...

I think you'd be surprised how little different the 40 odd bhp makes.

I got gapping coming out of the final chicane by 125 GP bikes at Silverstone, I was only able to start gaining again by the time I went under the start/finish gantry.

I'm sure there's people you go past where you are the straight line hero. Razz

Annyway I digress.

Seems like a K1 Gixxer thou or an early R1 fits your bill nicely. Thumbs Up

I dont know why, but I really dont want an R1 for some reason!? Confused

Thinking Mille possibly, but think I'd prefer a twin. Might leave it a couple of months before I buy one and save a few more pennys so I can go for something a little newer. Or maybe something will come up sooner! I'll have to keep my eye's open

Thumbs Up

Have a look on www.motoforum.net for some good deals at the moment; though mostly fours.

If you're getting owned on the straights, then the probability is you can get more speed coming out of the corners; as suggested, I don't think 40hp should make a massive amount of difference until you're a way down the straight.

Got lap times for any tracks?

the power difference is most noticed on faster tracks. places like cadwell or rockingham my 636 keeps with r's zx10's etc lap after lap.
if you feel you need more power then go for it.
my personal choice would be a gsxr750 for a 4cyl or an rsv mille....
im happy with the 636 tho, its fun screwing its neck on faster circuits, ideal for smaller circuits Wink

Not accurate ones. Someone timed me on their mobile recently at Cadwell on the 916 in the low to mid 1 40's. Brands Indy was around 56 on an old ZXR750. Not sure what I was lapping the GP track in when I was there on the 916.

My corner exit speed it fine I think. Like I said earlier, I do even pass a few (or at least pull along side) 1000's when I exit. I tend to make up all my time on braking and corner speed on the bigger bikes.

I think my main aim is to find a bike that has some decent suspension on it, but I do feel I never really have enough grunt along the straights. It's annoying pulling out and alongside riders when you exit a corner, only for them to pull away once you get in to 4th+ Sad

Thumbs Up

That's pretty respectable Cadwell time; I'm surprised you're finding it a big issue.
Doing those sorts of times, I've rarely found that it happens that much.
That sort of time was about the best I managed on the 675 (wasn't happy with riding) and also on the SV (much happier with riding).
I've seen a CBR600RR win a powerbikes race at Cadwell in the past (ok, he was /very/ good!)

It not really a big issue, it's just that I'd like a bit more straight line speed, as I just feel that's one area I'm (or the bike) not very strong in.

Just seen this.... https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Kawasaki-ZX636C1H-Track-bike_W0QQitemZ300271099642QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item300271099642&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

More power than the 916 had, but will be down on torque. Not sure if going 'down' to a 636 is what I really want though?!

I may have found an 05 blade for around the same price. Confused Question

Thumbs Up

Going from a 600 to a SV650 I acutally improved my lap times... going back I didn't get faster (ie I got worse; though I had a rather poor start to the year, with a broken arm and was generally being a bit crap).
Being down on mid-range torque shouldn't matter when you're in the right gear at the right time.

the major benefit of owning a 1000 bike is you get the experience of high velocity speed and tyres spinning alot more.

gives valuable experience in my opinion as it gets you use to the bike moving around alot more also In turn making 600cc speeds feel slower so then more likely to overcome any speed issues with high speed corners.

just my 2pence. I got my 2004 r1 for £3500, there are deals outthere to be had.

You can easily get 600's spinning up and making funny shapes....

I know, its just a bike I really dont want own for some reason!

Wave - I would rather the 998 than the 999, but just too expensive for a track only bike really. The Mrs would chop my nuts off if I spent £5k+ on a track bike, seeing as I still have the ZXR in the garage too! Confused Laughing

yea 998s are like collectors items now, and 999s can be had for cheap ish if you look around, buy a binned one for 2.5k and slap some track fairings on it.

I seem to prefer twins on track.

I think its the stigma attatched to R1s that makes me hate them so intensly.

For example if you rode past a chav scumbag, or even stopped an asked an R1 would be mentioed somewhere, "ahhh blud why dont you get an R1 best biek in da wowd innit !"

Or

My mates got da R1, we went past da police on the back wheel 190 mph with no hands, true Gs innit.

I actually had some div come up to me whist on my 749S parked up, asking me why i didnt get an R1 and how he used to have a RIZZLA rep R1.

So you can see why there isnt one Yamaha in my sig below Laughing

The R1 is what the Fireblade was to the 90s, but worse
