Wanted to put hardcore in the title, but that would probably be asking for trouble on here, going by lately.
I deliver hay and straw, and the baling twine is ripping my hands to shreds after the first hundred or so are handled per day, particularly on the cold days, you see the blood before you feel it.
I need something decent, not some Nivea rubbish that does naff all but make your hands greasy for 10 mins then disappears.
I need something that scottish fisherman or lumberjacks would use, because it works. Along those lines.
Any recommendations please.
NB: Gloves are not an option, they are inefficient and just get stuck everywhere, dropped, soaked through and eventually ripped or lost. Need my hands to toughen up, but to not bleed too much in the process. ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

Neutrogena stuff - it's concentrated (Norweigen fishermen use it).
You can get it unperfumed too.
Good shit.

What Mudskipper said, if you're going for a hand cream Neutrogena is definitely the best.
Might be worth looking into barrier creams rather than hand creams though? Neutrogena will help once your hands are cut/chapped etc but a decent barrier cream may lessen the effect of the damage in the first place. ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

I swear by this stuff - I use handwashes and gels all day which are pretty much rip your skin to shreds (chemically, not physically mind) and i find that the original e45 cream really helps. Tried the Norwegian Formula stuff, but I thought it was too concentrated for my liking, I prefer the feeling of a good dollop of cream in me palms...ooh er matron!

Another vote for Neutrogena hand cream.
The next problem you will have is a rash on your forearms where the ends of the hay prickle them. Wearing a long sleeve top and putting a spiral of gaffa tape or PVC tape along the arm below the elbow (on top of the sleeve) works well for this.
You'll be wanting leather knee patches in your trousers too. You can easily knack three pairs of trousers if you are stacking square bales for a week.
I agree, gloves aren't a good option, your hands will cramp if you wear gloves. The only ones you'd get away with are those skintight yellow buckskin ones. They are expensive and almost impossable to get hold of in the UK. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. I was definitely going to recommend barrier cream - whilst it generally smells minging you get used to it. It really helped when I was working at hell on earth (heat treatment plant) handling hot metal covered in degreaser all day.
The other thing I used to do, which I suspect you'd be less inclined to try, is wear cotton gloves in bed. Absolutely cover your hands in E45 (really thick) then wear the gloves - the moisturiser will absorb overnight. ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

Thanks for all the replies, I've picked up some atrixo, and have some of that Neutrogena on the way (the Norway flag alone, sells it to me how clever of them).
The key thing is I want my hands to stay supple long enough for them to toughen up a bit, rather than cracking/ripping and then having to start over.
Gloves are fine when dexterity isn't required, but as stinkwheel seems to know, hay bales can be really awkward getting your fingers under the twine in order to pick them up it rules out gloves instantly on all but the loosest bales. We throw them a lot as well, the gloves would get stuck in the bale and sap the kinetic energy out of the throw, just at the worst time.
Might be useful for carrying individual bales a distance, but can't see any other use for that, short of hanging dead people from. Looks a very american idea, introducing a sharp metal object to a dodgy enough problem. ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

The lack of tools is suprising. Hay hooks and thats it. Big bulldog clip type things with teeth is what you need, now go and invent some proper hay handling tools. |
