Right basically to some up I am looking for a geared 50cc.

I am barely 5ft 4 tall 16 year old girl who has been hooked on everything bike for a long time now and I am having some trouble finding a bike that I am going to feel comfortable on and gain some confidence.
(Not that you can call a 50c a bike but hey you have got to start somewhere...)

I have sat on a Derbi GPR 50 which has a seat height of 82cm and I can just touch both toes down on each foot or one foot just about flat with the other one not making much contact at all.

I am quite bent over on this bike in quite an aggressive riding position ideally I would like a more upright riding position to learn the basics on as I feel it will make things more comfortable for me.

The only problem is that the trial type bikes are also too tall for me although these have the more upright riding position that I am looking for at this stage.

The lowest seat height of a geared 50cc is a caviga mito which has a seat height of 76cm yet this does not have the sort of 'sit up and beg' style riding position that I am looking for.

I have a couple of questions and would appreciate it if anyone can help me/point me in the right direction.

I know it is possible to lower bikes but don't really know the logistics of this and whether it is even thinking about if it costs a fair bit to do to a bike I won't be having for long.
Is it even worth considering this?

Is it worth looking into getting a 50cc road legal pit bike?
Quite fancy the quirkiness of them and feel that it would be quite a confident giver riding a bike that I can handle more easily at this stage.
Not a tiny monkey bike but a larger looking one which I have seen transformed from red to its current state in a different topic.
What road legal 50cc pits does anyone recommend?
Where do I stand legally on these?

Any other input that you have or help in answering any of the above then it would be greatly appreciated!

I have so much more that I could ask but this is a great starting point for me!

Thanks very much in advance!
Chloe xx

For your preferred riding style i'd recommend an enduro 50, but while they offer a more relaxed riding style they are also quite tall. You could, however, try an older twin-shock model that will be alot lower. Or an older road bike, such as the FS1, they will be alot lower than 'sport bike rep' 50's.

Pit-bikes; The trouble is trying to find a quality brand, they are predominantly Chinese and my advice is to stay away from anything that is associated to being Chinese. (Motorcycle wise Smile)

Other than that, they are as legal as the next bike if you buy a 'road-intended' one that will come with all necessary paperwork to register it OTR. That is assuming you are going to buy one brand-new.

I think you are referring to 'Binges' pit-bike, his is a 150cc IIRC, although you would be able to get a similar type of bike with a 50cc engine. The trouble with pit-bikes is that they are 4-stroke, and 50cc + 4-stroke = Slow Sad

Right.
Thanks for your input.

Have had sooo many people try and sell me a cheap Chinese scooter I have lost count!

Enduro style bikes I feel are the way to go but it is just a case of finding one low enough.
All seat heights on the geared 50cc enduros are 81cm+

Do any of you know what sort of an 'older twin shock model' would be worth looking at as Ant132 has said that these will be alot lower?

Thanks.

As Ant said, try a Yamaha FS1.

The seat height will be much lower than on an enduro bike and they are cheap bikes.

There's loads of spare parts for them too.

Get used to it - one foot is all you actually *need*.

I'd recommend special boots rather than lowering a bike, since you'll keep them a lot longer than you'll keep the bike. Have a look at my boot review - https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=156835&highlight=ladystar

hey
ive got a fs1-e and an rs50. fizzys are tiny in reality so would be ideal.there great classics aswell i know the fs1 aint as collectable so you can pick em up cheap.i know someone who has a 50 pit bike (thumpstar) sounds great nd that but they tend to give you alot of trouble without much speed, hope this helps. personally i prefer the fs1e ridin position but the rs is just a different thing ...and alot lot faster.your size isnt to bad i have a mate hat about your size and he rides an aerox ok.

I personally find the seat on the Aerox quite tall in respect, I'm 5'7, Although you only need one leg to touch the ground, It feels better to be able to have BOTH feet on the ground when you start off.

Without being biased here, I WOULD recommend an aerox...
But at the same time, I know you would like a geared bike, So good luck ^.^ (Not that you should need it)

All the new upright bikes are tall ones.

A Honda MT5 would fit the bill, but the youngest one will be a 'K' reg now and be utterly fubar'd by now.

hi

At 5'4" you are not that short (some on here would kill to be that tall).

You might well find that, once moving, the riding position on things like the RS50 is not that bad. A lot of seat height / riding position issues are down to confidence.

The older 50s tend to be less extreme as far as riding position (eg, Honda MBX50, Yamaha RD50), and fairly cheap but the trouble is finding one that hasn't been destroyed by at least one of the probably 20 learners in its life.

All the best

Keith

Seriously its about technique rather than seat height,

Day 1 of Africa twin with its 900mm seat height, I was whoa can barely get my toes down , a few days later and a minor mod giving me 30mm lower I can flat foot the africa twin.

I learned on a Yamaha Virago 125 which had a really low seat. Bit long, but great confidence inspiring position.

Could be worth looking around and seeing if theres any 125's that can be easily lowered suspension wise. 5' 4 isnt that small either, most 125s you should fit on with ease.

my girl is around the same height as u, the last time she sat on my cpi sx 50 she could just get one foot down but i know that the supermoto version is a little smaller with it only having 17" wheels, i would say she would be able to touch the floor with both feet on the supermoto model so maybe you should look at a aprillia, derbi or cpi supermoto, as for them 50cc pitbikes i would bother with them, 1 their nearly all chinese with the worst build quality in the world, 2 there even harder for cars to see you with them being so small and 3 even the good ones are unreliable, try a supermoto 50cc and see if you get both feet down as its basicly a trail bike with 17" wheels and no chunky off road tires so you will have the riding position you desire

Girls usually stop growing around 14-16 years old, height wise anyway.

Short angry person syndrome kicking in there big time! Laughing

More about balance and confidence as some have mentioned. Person near me is a fair bit shorter than me and rides a Husqvarna Supermoto (I'm only 5"7). People will say get experience before getting a bigger bike but there's only one way to learn, and that's to jump on.
