PostPosted: 20:17 - 11 Mar 2009    Post subject: Giving up smoking...... Reply with quote

I've been a habitual weed smoker for around 15 years, and a cigarette smoker for around the last 5 years.
I average around a quarter to a half ounce of skunk per week, and around 10 - 15 ciggies a day (Marlboro reds).

Well, since Sunday i've knocked it all on the head and just quit - fuck me, it's hard work!!

Life seems boring and empty without being stoned most of the time (how else can BCF be tolerable??), and the habits i've developed over the years are already proving difficult.

Finished work early today and decided to go fishing for a while as it was such a nice afternoon. All i could think about was how much i'd have liked to spark up a nice big fatty and lain back on the towpath to watch the world pass me by.

I came soooooooo close to paying a visit to 'the man' on my way home, i keep trying to rationalise it to myself 'well, i could just have one.......' etc etc.

Any suggestions?

Good luck with it mate.

How about sticking the cash you would be spending of fags/weed in a pot and buying yourself something decent when it mounts up. Won't take long!

Not really.
I just knocked fags on the head last Halloween, and the joints kinda went the same way, until I realised I could smoke them without tobacco Wink

But then there's no way I was smoking that amount of weed, so I don't usually miss it (with or without tobacco) for a REALLY long time.

Sorry, not much help.

But keep it up, cos you'll be quite pleased you did, once you get past the My God I Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeed It stage ...

Days and days go by and suddenly I realise "Crikey, I haven't even thought about having a fag for ages."

1/4-1/2 ounce a week?!?!! Never been at that stage.

I always go though phases at uni of smoking once a week, then twice and soon enough its everyday. Stays there for up to a month usually and to be honest I cannot give it up untill I really want to.

I dont mean it would be nice, once i woke up at 4am and the only thing to get back to sleep was having a joint which scared the shit out of me and could give it up.

I think something Bonny once said on another thread about it being a bit of a wasters drug really hits home, a few people i know how messed their education and now no longer a uni.

I also haven't had a smoke since sunday.

This may surprise the kat. My rationale is that for assorted factors, having a fag felt really, really good on sunday morning. It's not going to feel anything like as good now.

This won't be long term though, off on holiday in a couple of weeks, and the law is that you have to smoke on holiday.

i agree with bat

when your thinking about going out and buying some fags or weed, take the money, put it in a jar and you'll probably be so happy with the amount your saving you wont even notice not smoking Mr. Green

or you could always occupy yourself by reading a book, playing counter strike, or eating something like ice cubes Thumbs Up

I have found something that has replaced weed for about a week now.
Its a legal drug that you can buy of a site, its called . . Salvia, you have to smoke it in a bong and using a turbo lighter. It gives you a crazy like trip feeling for like 5 minuted then just goes. When i have ran out i shall be back to the good stuff though Cool
Look it up, its funky shit

Yeah. Keep it up. When you don't need the weed anymore you'll realise how over rated it is.

Patches instead of fags? Or just enjoy the fags? Depends how smoke free you want to be. Karma

I am off the smokes now a while I done it for my son. I went cold turkey. I tried all the other ways over the years like patches and they made me ill and worse. But for some reason I am shocked I havnt cracked up this time. I didnt bother to tell anyone and still havnt said a word and its been months just forgot I ever smoked. The less you think about it and talk about it the better. I fond once you starte counting how long you gave up you get nervous and start thinking about it.

The weed bit is harder, I done that years ago. Went on diazapan though to help and it did only had to kick them to. That one was a good move I fel so much more alert and better off the weed. One thing at a time though dont push yourself. Weed first then step by step. You dont want to fail as it will knock the confidence and will power.

I am still waiting to feel good however but then I just had a baby and I really have felt rotten since that and drained. I have notice I am not twitchy anymre an its freaky actually as I expect to feel pumped up on adranalin and now i dont have any. Bit of an empty feeling. i will need sometihng to replace that now, fast bike lol

all the best do keep it up. Better the cash in your pocket than the tax man or your dealer.

Giving up smoking is easy, it has it's own solution.

I am now '5 years later', it was the best thing I ever did.

When I quit smoking (about 10 fags a day and as much weed as you) I started to exercise, bought a cheap 2nd hand road bike from ebay and started cycling.

I started off doing probably no more than 2k rides, virtually flat. When I came back from the first one I was totally destroyed, just collapsed on the floor. Now I can do 80k rides, with 20k climbs.

Point that I'm making is that if you change nothing other than the smoking then it is easy to fall back into it, especially with weed, since when you smoke weed you don't really do much! Without it you would just be bored 'doing' the same things.

Exercise is perfect for filling that void, since it quickens your physical improvement and well being, plus it helps keep the weight under control.

Oh, and one last thing, if you have bother with the nicotine addiction, and start again, read Allan Carrs' "The only way to stop smoking". Worked for me, the missus and at least two others who have read it.

i have been quit now since new years eve, and i havnt touched a single fag, and im using nothing but will power!

i thought the same though, evrything just seemed boring and had no purpose without smoking, but am soon realising that it was just smoking which was sad, and you arranged your life around your next fag.

TBH im still gagging for one now even after 2 months, but am trying to focus on other things like getting fit (not that im not already!) thinking of joining the local rowing club...

the only thing that is bothering me about quitting is that i think im putting on weight, and i dont want to as i wont fit in my 800 quid leathers this summer Laughing Laughing

keep with it Thumbs Up

Distraction is the key...for fags i don't know about weed.
I learnt to juggle. Everytime I felt like a smoke I'd have 5 mins juggling practice. It worked for me....I can now juggle and smoke at the same time LOL......not really I haven't smoked for ages! Just don't eat instead of smoking. Good luck

Could just smoke less.

I recently gave up the fags and I've also limited myself to one spliff a night. To be honest I've not really noticed any difference after the initial phase.

Keep a pack of fags in the house or car. Then it is you deciding you aren't having one rather than wanting one and not being able to get it.

If you aren't smoking because you can't easily get hold of a fag, you haven't stopped, you just can't get any.

That may just be my own mentality.

Find an activity to get buried in. I made small alcohol fuelled stoves out of old drinks cans then tested the different designs for speed and efficiency.

Thats one hell of a test of will power there! id say keep em out your way untill your confident you can do without them... then buy and pack and destroy them in any way you see fit (NOT BURNING!).

Thats the advice we were given for conquering something hard.

Something simple but important...

When someone offers you a cigarette:

DON'T SAY - no thanks. I've quit

DO SAY - no thanks. I don't smoke

And stay strong!

Thumbs Up

Good advice Mark, if you o say you quite expect a coversation about how long, what did you use to quite, how your getting along and all while wathing this person smoke in front of you. Just pretend you never smoke to yourself, block it out and get something else to do. I dont see the point on patches and other aids as you still are getting the nicotine and it makes it harder to stop. I am only speaking again for the ciggeretts smoking here not the weed. Get rid of the weed first and then concentrate on the smoking, unless you want to get it all over and done with at once.

Now I aint coming in here again as I am talking to much about smoking and I am startig to think about it. Off to annoy the canvas man again.

Im looking to stop again soon.
I stoped for a year when I was pregnant with my son.
Not through choise but I would be ill if I even if I took a few puffs.
Sadly I started again soon after he was born.
I stoped for around 2-3 months in 2007 - I done this for myself, partner (as they hated the smell of smoke) and Josh again.
But after a few beers out came the smokes.
Im on a diet at the moment, last time I stoped smoking I put on the weight so I wont stop just yet Laughing
i will do tho - altho my willpower is very weak Thumbs Down

so this kinda put my life into perspective and kicked me up the arse to stop,

otherwise that will be you one day Neutral

I have never seen someone show as much 'will power' as my father when he was dying from cancer. He'd stopped smoking several years before that but the damage had probably started.
He was unable to eat properly for about a year.
Numerous surgical procedure's to alleviate symptoms.

If you can watch someone live through all of that and not get a boost for your will power then you are well and truly not worth worrying about.

Smoke if you want but not near me,

2nd hand smoke kills many more people than is well known.

I was so happy they kicked the smokers out of our pubs in Scotland.
Only folk who complained were the smokers....
