Hey guys, I've recently bought an aftermarket headlight unit to replace my original one. My original light used two 501 bulbs (w5w) as sidelights and two H4 bulbs for the low and high beams.

This new light however only uses two strange dual filament bulbs for the headlight (which is fine as I could just wire them up with the same layout as the H4's; having one filament for the low beam and a filament for the high beam) however has no 501 or other bulbs to use for sidelights.

As a result I was thinking I could wire the low beams to the sidelight switch and then just have highbeams on the second filament. I just need to know where this stands in terms of my M.O.T as I need to get my M.O.T renewed and putting the old light back isn't realistically possible to do at this point.

Please let me know as soon as possible as I am literally working on my bike right now. Many thanks for all useful replies as always! Thumbs Up

I've taken a photo of the headlight bulb below...

on a bike i had once it had no working side light and just the dips and mains (the sidelight unit bit had been removed). the dips came on when you turned on the ignition, but as there was no visible sidelight.

it failed its MOT for no side light.

however took my zx10r for its mot recently and theres no on off switch for the lights and that passed, i dont think you can see a side light in there unless its on with ignition and then dip beam when bike starts.

I wait to be stood corrected, but I'm fairly certain you'll need a side light. The only situation I can see you not needing a side light is if the headlight dipped beam comes on automagically like on my old SRAD.

You could probably bodge up an LED sidelight.

Could you please go into more detail? as I'm not a huge fan of drilling holes into my new headlight... Neutral

Well, you start by drilling a hole in the side of your nice new headlight...

Glue in something like this:
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/12v-Low-Voltage-MR11-MR16-Lamp-Holder-LED-Light-NEW_W0QQitemZ170277779082QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_HomeGarden_Lighting_Lamps_Lighting_SM?hash=item170277779082&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Wire it up, add a bulb and hellloooo MOT.

you can use the existing hole if you are careful , ie take the main bulb out, then through the hole you glue in an LED or a bulb on the side of the head lamp, let it set then put it back together again. Taking the small bulb out when you've finished.

Its odd though in that for 3 MOTs I never had a side light only the main beam and dipped beam.

My bike doesn't have sidelights. Nor do any bikes where the headlight automatically comes on. Mine has never failed an MOT for not having sidelights.

Don't they have em for parking lights? When I lock the steering, if I turn my key one more click it leaves the sidelights on...

Yes - and that's a requirement in case you have to park briefly in a busy road at night.

Nay nay.

Fahd: Before you go drilling holes in your headlight (?!), you'll be pleased to hear that my bike doesn't have a sidelight and has never failed an MOT or ever been mentioned. There's even a setting on the switch for the lights for the sidelight but it just does nothing.

Oh, and my headlights don't automatically come on.

That is brilliant! Very Happy how many times has your bike passed it's M.O.T without sidelights? are you sure they just haven't realised? Also why don't you have a sidelight in? So do you guys think it would be better to wire my dipped beam to the sidelight switch or to the dipped beam one?

My bike passed without sidelight bulbs - on my RVF main beam is on all the time.

My CBR doesn't have a 'park' option on the ignitiion.

4 times, 3 different testing places too.

It doesn't have a sidelight because it's a japanese import and originally the sidelight switch put the front 2 indicators on constantly, but I disabled that before the first MOT cos it'll confuse the hell out of drivers here.

I would recommend that you wire the dipped beam to the dipped beam switch, and have the sidelight switch do nothing, 'cos that's what my bike's like and it passes every time.

Make sure your main beam works though, that is a requirement.

Apparently no need for one.

Absolutely agree, there is no need for a side light even if there is a switch fitted.

When i replaced my headlight recently it came without a side light fitting in and being due for its MOT i called a few testing stations and they all said that it wasnt a problem.

Good luck with the MOT Thumbs Up

Excellent. That's great for me. I should still wire up the rear 'side-light' to come on with the sidelight switch though right? I hope there aren't any weird rules about the front and back having to come on at the same time or anything... Neutral

Have a look on UKMoT.com, it has all the regulations on there.

However you may get screwed unless the lighting unit has the correct approval marking stamped on to it
