Sidelights? M.O.T Requirements...

Hey guys, I've recently bought an aftermarket headlight unit to replace my original one. My original light used two 501 bulbs (w5w) as sidelights and two H4 bulbs for the low and high beams.

This new light however only uses two strange dual filament bulbs for the headlight (which is fine as I could just wire them up with the same layout as the H4's; having one filament for the low beam and a filament for the high beam) however has no 501 or other bulbs to use for sidelights.

As a result I was thinking I could wire the low beams to the sidelight switch and then just have highbeams on the second filament. I just need to know where this stands in terms of my M.O.T as I need to get my M.O.T renewed and putting the old light back isn't realistically possible to do at this point.

on a bike i had once it had no working side light and just the dips and mains (the sidelight unit bit had been removed). the dips came on when you turned on the ignition, but as there was no visible sidelight.

it failed its MOT for no side light.

however took my zx10r for its mot recently and theres no on off switch for the lights and that passed, i dont think you can see a side light in there unless its on with ignition and then dip beam when bike starts.

I wait to be stood corrected, but I'm fairly certain you'll need a side light. The only situation I can see you not needing a side light is if the headlight dipped beam comes on automagically like on my old SRAD.

You could probably bodge up an LED sidelight.

Well, you start by drilling a hole in the side of your nice new headlight...

Glue in something like this:

Wire it up, add a bulb and hellloooo MOT.

My bike doesn't have sidelights. Nor do any bikes where the headlight automatically comes on. Mine has never failed an MOT for not having sidelights.

Don't they have em for parking lights? When I lock the steering, if I turn my key one more click it leaves the sidelights on...

My bike passed without sidelight bulbs - on my RVF main beam is on all the time.

My CBR doesn't have a 'park' option on the ignitiion.

Absolutely agree, there is no need for a side light even if there is a switch fitted.

When i replaced my headlight recently it came without a side light fitting in and being due for its MOT i called a few testing stations and they all said that it wasnt a problem.

Excellent. That's great for me. I should still wire up the rear 'side-light' to come on with the sidelight switch though right? I hope there aren't any weird rules about the front and back having to come on at the same time or anything...
