it hasn't been about anything other than making money since the end of the 70s, the trend of banning the different or inspired started as far back as the 6 wheeler and twin engined cars..
someone brilliant having a smoke and a think and coming up with something that beats the snot out of everyone else who didn't think of it allowing their car & driver to claim the title by a clear 100points doesn't sell seats at races and replica ferrari pit jackets
F1 over the last 20 years has become F1(plc), a privately owned venture designed to market fashionable drivers and the products they endorse to the mass consumer market

same here, i've been watching F1 since i can remember, at a guess that'd be 1982-83 onwards, i was a Senna fan from then, i have vague recollections of him in a Lotus but my strong memories are of him in a McLaren
I've been a McLaren fan ever since supporting Hakkinen, Brundle, Raikkonen (even Coulthard, although he was never going to be champion.. his chin lacked the aerodynamics for it). Last year i decided to support red bull instead, McLaren have fallen in my estimation as a team since Newey left, this year i'm really hoping Button's advantage can be maintained
at least this year they've got the slicks back, sadly it's at the cost of making it a single tyre manufacturer for the grid.. still here's hoping ____________________ Well, I've wrestled with reality for 35 years, Doctor, and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it. - Elwood P. Dowd |

What is really needed now is a change of the rules.
Give the teams a engine size. Then say you car cannot be bigger than X,Y,Z and no less than x kilo's. What they do within that area is upto them.
I would also limit the spending per car. Just to make sure that all teams can compete. Pointless having teams on the grid who simply cannot make a car that competitive.
Let each team decide who's tyre's they want to use, makes for interesting racing when this happens. Rather than being forced onto one brand of tyre because they have dropped a load of cash into someone's pocket...... ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

I reckon a power limit and a weight limit would be ideal. Then just say do what you want. It can run on anything, and in any way. ____________________ My Flickr |

Ive said it before a few times and i'll say it again.
IMO the most interesting way they could re-rule it would be to say, "you have X amount of fuel to do Y amount of laps, your car must have 4 wheels." Those would be my only rules, then everything else is down to the designers, engine type, aerodynamics, tyres, the lot.
I dont know what sort of figures are realistic for F1 but say X was 30 litres and Y was 80 laps, make sence?

To be fair Le Mans prototype racing is bringing more to the road cars these days than F1 is.
They should bring back a prototype class in endurance bike racing. Prototype endurance racing is the reason we have beam frames and single sided swing arms. ____________________ My Flickr |

I think we should just get rid of F1 completely and replace it with a cross between Scrapheap Challenge and F1.
Whereby every race each team start of with the same tools and same number of members, teams would be situated around a huge scrapheap of allsorts but unable to see each other. They'd be given 10 hours to build a racing car, then the next day they all race round the now redundant F1 tracks and whoever wins gets to chose 1 item off another teams car i.e engine, wheels, seats, chassis. Then it starts all over again with that winning team using the parts it has won previously... ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.
(7 year gap), BMW F650 (Relaxing ride). Aprilia Caponord ETV1000 (Big and bold). Yamaha FZS600 (got me in trouble too quick!).

learn something new every day, i was always told they were banned
modern f1 cars do something around 3mpg at best i think so you're looking at between 4 and 6 litres per lap at race speed depending on the length of the lap, so in a 60 lap race you're going to burn around 240 - 360 Litres
current f1 rule for tank size is 220 Litres maximum, meaning that you're guaranteed to need at least 1 stop, you could reduce that to 150 Litres maximum, which would make two stops necessary and give the tyre manufacturers the option to make their tyres more sticky as they have a shorter maximum life expectancy
personally i'd go with the "4 wheels and tank size restriction" ruleset but i'd add a 3rd to the list, no electronic / automated driver aid..
..meaning that, any mechanical tech you can design into your car is allowed, but it has to be operated manually by some dude in a nomex romper suit. No abs, no traction control, no launch control, no auto / semi-auto gearboxes, no dumbass KERS "oh it's saving the planet" BS use a fscking turbo if you want one, no ship-to-shore comms control, etc, etc.. either you have a clutch pedal and know how to use it or you take the weight penalty and have a durable sequential box, any whinging and you'll get a rule forcing a H-gate box now work for a living you miserable slacker..

Hurdles, land mines, or maybe each team gets the choice of 1 "wacky racers" add on, be it oil slick, spikes from the back of the car, suspension which shoots up to let you drive over the car in front.
You know it would work!

I'd say you have to watch it to come up with a statement like that!? And also watch horse racing and golf to compare it to.
Or are you just assuming this from reading other people's opinions on it?
Odd!

I don't "watch" it, I see it occasionaly. Flicking channels, there it is, I have a look for a couple of minutes, remark upon what utterly boring predictable dross it is, and switch over.
They don't 'race', they drive around in circles to a set formula ( ). Then they all whine and bitch about "His car's better than mine, it's illegal" or "He went over that bit, he cheated!" It's pathetic. And the bang-for-buck ratio, how totally FUCKED is that?! Hundreds of millions of pounds (!!!)...for what? THAT? Screamy cars going around in circles..."If he comes first he won't win the championship, but if that other bloke comes in tenth he will...ooh, it's nail biting, the chap in ninth place is miles from anyone but he's GOING TO WIN!!!"

I've watched it and he's pretty much correct.
Although I'd be open to entertaining why folks do like it, there seems to be no competition in it; the cars just drone round. Too many laps perhaps? I'm not sure, but the noise is akin to babies crying and that's never good to listen to.
I should temper this post by saying, I do find watching snooker strangely soporific...

all the teams think that there cars are legal!! but it comes down to how they interprit the rules and more so the reason for the rules??
the issue with the rear diffuser/double diffuser that we will call a DD
is that the intention was to make over taking easier
to do this you have to make the air leaving the back of the car smoother=cleaner this allows the car behind to get closer so it can slip stream the car infront and get a sling shot past it this is mainly down to the floor which is where the diffuser is of course, the wings are almost more of a fine tuning thing as the floor creates the most downforce the rules were that a air dam had to be fitted 300mm inboard from the rear of the car but this year it had to be at the back axle this cuts down the amount of air that can pass through the gap between the floor and road and so cuts the amount of downforce and basicaly the new DD is a hole in the floor infront of the dam which allows the air to get out and pass over a wing and so creates a shit load of downforce but again causes dirty air to leave the car hence reducing the downforce of the car following
the DD was actually designed by the guys at super aguri but when they started to get into £££ troubles the designers went to wait for it wait for it!!!!!!
BRAWN,TOYOTA&williams
the argument about the DD design wasnt really the design but the fact that it went against the intention of the rules and to be fair in that respect the other teams were right as the DD does interfere with the overtaking but I can understand why the FIA voted in favour of it because brawn/honda and toyota and williams didnt get anywhere last year and toyota are going to pull out at the end of this year unless they get a win and its good to see other teams up front it makes it more interesting for the viewers more viewers = more money SHOW ME THE MONEY its always about money at the end of the day aint it

Interesting racing?
Get rid of the drivers, and spectators to be on the safe side.
That removes all the worries about the poor-dears hurting themselves because this year's brakes haven't come on as much as this year's engine.
Don't care if they're remote or computer controlled.
Infact, don't really care about much else. Maybe a 'no contact' class and one where they didn't even have that rule . |
