hello

i have been out of biking for a year or 2. then by chance seen a cheap bike to which i liked the look of its a aprilia tuareg 125 not beening runing for over a year. the lad i got it off just knowed it as a tuareg but from looking on the net have found they is a es model wind and others.

its a d reg 87

does any one have any info on these bikes or can point me in the right direction. and is it worth doing up, as it stands it in need of a make over

If you wanna spend the time doing it up it is worth it fully just to see an older bike back on the road. My cousin had one for a few years he loved it. Nifty little 2stroke with 25bhp as standard new.
I would rip that engine apart and make sure it is all ok before you start commiting to spending your hard earned cash on putting it back on the road.

Cool! Haven't seen one of those for donkeys years, should be more than 25bhp if it's the 123 engine. I would say as it cost you so little to start with it may be worth doing it up & getting it running, engine parts for those are still in abundance. Thumbs Up

Christ! That looks worse for wear. Shocked I'd strip it mate get oit all cleaned up & repaint everything. You'll be able to check all the connectors & such much better with everything off. Thumbs Up

The problem may be something as simple as a blown fuse. That would be very likely if there is no power to anything after fitting a new battery. If not then continuity test each length of wiring with a multimeter. Tedious but will almost certainly find the problem plus any other issues that may be lurking.

My advice would be to give it a thorough clean. Seeing as you intend to strip it apart and rebuild it, the easiest approach would be to give it a good steam clean and then clean each compenent with a rag soaked in thinners as it comes off. Another good tip is to put all the fasteners and washers of that component in a poly bag and tie it to the part, that way nothing goes missing and you know which screw secures which part.

I haven't tried any of the above on a motorcycle but they all helped when repairing various fast jet aircraft so the theory is well proven!!

Good luck and keep us all informed!

I'm not good at repairing bikes but it looks tough work for me. There are many rusty parts. I hope you sort it out.

I'm afraid buying a cheap better condition bike might cost less than repairing this bike watching these photos. Am I wrong?

you got a bargain there.......
the engine is the very early 123 with a pneumatic power valve
from a distance you've got a 34mm carb and matching inlet rubber, these 2 are worth more than you paid for the bike alone......
it might not run because you have the polarity swapped on the battery.......looks to me like the neg connection is feeding the fuses Mr. Green

Second that. I'd say it looks like someones also done a bodge extension on the negative lead to make it reach the positive terminal on the battery. Try whpping it round, check the fuses and it may well come to life...

thanks guys it worked !!!!!!!

it is still a bit mixed up horn sounds like a whisle and the lights are mixed up too. but the starter spins. i just need to find a cover to hold the starter gear on to see if it will start.

as long as its not costing me loads of money i am going to keep going with it untill i find a major problem. if i can here it running then i will stripp it down get it painted up and free off breaks and re build the supsenion.

the next thing i am un sure off is power valve? in the photo nothing is holding this on and they is a big spring under it which fell out.? any ideas welcome

Don't you dare sell it without offering me first refusal!!!

I'd say your in a pretty priveliged position. You have little self confidence with engineering but have a decent and cheap bike that you don't depend on and is in need of a bit of work. That's a perfect situation! You'll quickly find how simple most of the jobs will be and with a bit of thought a decent manual (if you can find one) and some simple toolage, you'll get it sorted without too much difficulty or expense if you dig around for parts.

After all that you'll have a good little bike you'll feel a part of and be much more confident and capable with sorting your own bikes in future instead of paying garages for doing work. In time the bike will have paid for itself!

Stick with it mate!! Thumbs Up Wink

Hi

It is a Tuareg Wind (although not sure it is badged Wind). The engine is a Rotax 127, not a 123 (main difference is that the 123 has a counter balancer but the 127 doesn't, the 127 basically being a competition engine that was also sold in road form while the 123 is a road engine). Quite a few internal bits are the same between the 123 and 127 engines, but not many external bits. Claimed power was 26hp, but I suspect the reality is 20~21.

The engine will run without most of the electrics in place (it is self generating). Basically the stator has 3 wires to connect to the coil and one wire that goes to the loom, and as long as those are OK then it should run.

The starter motor is a bit of a bodge on these. Bit of bent metal holding it on one side, while on the other it bolts to the plastic cover over the rotor.

Engine spares you should be able to get from Peter Knight (0176 141 4106 ).

All the best

Keith

3. undo the 3 bolts ontop of the engine ( the ones around the spark plug ) use a well fitting ring spanner or socket. DO NOT use an adjustable spanner, or something that half fits.

4. when youve got the head off, take some pictures of the bit you pulled off and the stuff underneath it, ie. piston / barrel.

On the 127 engine the head is a 1 piece unit. The 4 domed nuts you can see on the top go onto studs that come up from the crankcases, and hold both the barrel and head of. Once you have undone them you may as well take the barrel off (the head gasket is a rubber O ring, the outer gasket being a large square section rubber seal).

Piston is easy to get a replacement for, and gaskets not really a problem. Think the 127 fitted to the Tuareg has a plated barrel (the version of the engine in the early AF1 used a cast iron liner which could be rebored).

I might have a parts list for the bike or the engine. Not sure.

All the best

Keith
