Right then, I'm in the market for an old ZXR 750. Wanted one ever since I was a little boy, and with the 10R off the road until I can find an engine I'm thinking of getting something fairly cheap to hoon about on when it's sunny like today, and perhaps a little commuting.

So, which models are regarded as the best amongst the BCF knowledgebase? What should I look out for? My budget is less than a £1k.

I had the H1 model with the nice hoses, but apparently you have to take the cams out to adjust the valve clearances. This makes it a time-consuming PITA so they often don't get done. I think the later L models have a redesigned engine which makes the process much easier.

I want mine back dammit Crying or Very sad

You could probably pick up a tatty(ish) L for around a grand.

Mate of mine just sold his P1 (ZX7) for just under a grand. Was in good condition, ran really well, with track bodywork. Only down side was is was registered as a stolen recovered, not that you'd ever have known!

Nothing out the ordinary to check for. Just look for the usual head bearings, accident damange, brakes etc... that you'd look at on any bike. They dont have any 'over publicised' problem that the bloke down the pub bangs on about.

Thumbs Up

I currently own an H2 model and i absolutely love it, as do most kids when it howls past. Classic shape but still has a fair ammount of get up and go when you need it. The rear shock is a little on the firm side but thats part of the overall character of the bike. Depends how old you want to go really.

What do you want to know? ask away!
Iconic bikes that some are really fanatical about(Including myself)

I've learnt alot about them since having owning one (I now have 3) and others like Barry can be a wealth of knowledge and has alot more hands on experience than I with them.

I have 2x J1 's and 1x H1 and people bang on about it's crap engine. Gotta say for the road its a decent bike, sometimes I think I'd like extra power from an L but then think would it really make me a better rider or allow me to corner carve quicker? not really. It's all about the top end mostly. J v L have pretty much similar 0-60 and quarter mile specs.

Sound engines, really sound.
Again just ask and we'll fill you in.

Cheers for the heads up guys.

It isn't going to be a showroom bike, it ain't going to be my pride and joy, it just needs to be able to raise the odd smile every now and then and be ... dare I say it ... reliable.

Don't need to know anything specific at the moment, was just wondering what the general consensus was about each different model. I've had 2 7Rs, so a hard ride isn't a foreign concept to me Laughing . Comfort isn't an issue.

Jenks, if you could find out if your stepdad is up for selling let me know as I'm not too far away.

Probably two traits ZXR will give 100%. Always puts a smile on my face when required.

And mechanically it's been realiable all the way.
Sure I've had consumable issues and brakes seizing, fork seals gone recently but engine wise it never misses. Had a carb/electrical issue that put me round the bend for a while but sorted now and could of happened on any bike.

I have to say, I didn't find the finish on mine too bad. No better or worse than the Yamahas and Hondas I've owned of the same age. But then again, the bike will probably be the best part of 20 years old so how it's been cared for is going to count for more in terms of the condition it's now in.

On a long run, I actually found mine very comfy. Around town, a different story entirely!

i had a highly modified h1, but i would stay well away from the h1 or h2, not because the build quality as i think it was spot on, but because the ride is so hard, the engine is just a upgraded gpz unit with stupid valve clearance set up, plus the valve seats are quite soft,
it doesnt have usd's like the rest of them.
go for as later model as you can possibly afford

Cool - looks good.

They all seem to have around 37k on the clock now. L models have more power than the previous J models and a better rear shock. The J models are lighter though with more mid-range and better fuel economy.
