Would 40,000 miles on the clock of a CBR 400 be a high number? I know its not recommended to buy a bike with this kind of mileage but the price is very good and the rest of the bike is in fair knick.

CBR engins would survive an apocalypse,

along with Toyota Hilux'S, and cockroches

but 40k is alot.... good look around, test ride, through all the gears.
Thumbs Up

What age is it?

It might be other parts that all start failing before the engine does.

wouldnt be too bad if it had enough history with it so you know its had parts replaced and serviced when it needed it

As long as it's been properly maintained it should be ok, my ZZR was almost touching 40k when I sold it on and it was still as sweet as a nut, if anything it was in better shape than the 14k mile Futura I traded it in for Neutral

Try to budget for a decent service right of the bat if you don't have a full history to hand though, it'll do it good in the long run and let you get right ontop of any potential issues from the get go.

Should be fine. Check the charging system though.

Ask when the engine was last fully overhauled, just in case of excessive wear&tear of circlips/gear cogs are needing to be replaced, as you don't want the gearbox to jam on you while riding!

my old cbr had over 45k on it and was still running sweet, honda engines are indeed bulletproof.

You sure its 40,000 miles and not kilometers?

Unless its got the KPH to MPH converter then the mileometer will be clocking in KM not Miles.

As has been said, They are gear driven cams, And bloody solid engines to be honest.

At 40,000 miles a well looked after engine is barely half way through its life but theres other stuff that needs looking after/replacing like suspension, shock, exhaust system, brake discs, brakes and loads of other possibly expensive stuff.

Maurice has an NC30 with about 100,000km on the clock. You wouldn't think it to look at it, but he has looked after it well.

40k on a CBR4 engine is no problem, they're pretty tough. They do suffer from infrequent oil and coolant changes though, corrosion from just using water as coolant will contribute to head gasket failure.

Of course, if it's had 40k miles or km of abuse and no servicing it'll be screwed. As others have said, its the rest of the bike that could be knackered, not so much from mileage but from age.

well, in my experiance, get the valves check, ive had 2 cbr400 nc29 engines now, the first one had done 40.000. did a compression test on it, it was fine, two weeks later dropped a valve on cylinder 2 and mullerd the engine, so i got another engine with less milage, but it was running like crap and i couldnt get the carbs balanced, a compression test followed, this engine had no compression on cylinder 2. so ive dropped the engine out and gave it to my mechanice that i use regularly, for when thers something i dont wana do, and hey presto, the valves again. get your valves checked, compression test, take up to the redline through all the gears, see how it idles. if theres is dout in your mind for one second, walk away.

My 2000 CG had 40k on the clock 10 of which i put on and the engine sounded like the day i got it!

I saw one CG with 96k on the clock and that still sounded sweet too! I guess it depends on how ragged the engine is?

My friends dad has a CB500 with 67k on the clock and he had that from new! he hasnt had any problems with that since buying it 10 years ago!

Thanks for the advice. I ended up buying a CBR 600 FM for £700. Had the Valve clearances and Carbs balanced last week and have been told it was all spot on. Apart from the carbs which where quite off. Did the Oil and filters myself.

33,000 miles on the clock and in fair nick.

Thanks for the help, hope it takes me to 60,000+ because im happy with this one Smile
