The dentist said it's best not to as it increases the risk of infection.

Anyone bothered to stop smoking after having tooth removed???

It's bad enough that i cant have a hot coffee but going without a spliff aswell just isn't right Crying or Very sad

I stopped for about 3 days after having a wisdom tooth out.

If you smoke you really increase the chance of getting dry socket which is basically a form of gangerene

Edit: Fixed now, but he's already posted on here now!

Anyone else see him in their mind as Steve Martin in Little shop of horrors?

The nicotine (and some other chemicals) in tobacco smoke reduce the number and size of blood vessels (and their ability to carry oxygen and healing cells) in your gums, which means that infection does not get washed away as well as it might do and you are increasing your risk of something called Alveolar Osteitis (or Dry Socket). Smoking is the biggest risk factor in this happening, but it's totally up to you if you want to risk it. Some say the pain is worse than the toothache it's self...

(however, if you want to read into it - and there are NO studies specifically been done on this btw before you say anything - nicotine is thought to be the major cause of this problem, and Grass doesn't contain Nicotine...?... Laughing )

Oh, and the hot thing is mainly until the anaesthetic wears off, so you don't drink something too hot and badly burn yourself (but not realise it till later). Wouldn't get too worked up about that. As said, smoking is the major cause of post op infections, however if you read the above link, you may do a bit of a risk assessment and see if you want to risk it...

Have fun,
Stu

Just read that link Thumbs Up

Firstly it seems i have less chance of any problems anyway as it was my upper wisdom tooth which was removed.

Secondly, i'm a bloke which lessens the chance.

But it also says not to drink out of a straw because of the negative pressure created, which i assume wont be a lot different to sucking on a ciggy.

Think i'll do without for now Thumbs Up
I should be good for a cuppa now anyway as i drink it with more milk than water=not much chance of it being hot enough to burn me Laughing

Thanks for the reply fella Thumbs Up
Did you pass your finals then? Should be due round about now i'm guessing.(just what i read in the thread tribal_tiger was trying to link to )

The straw thingy is a bit of a either/or. Our institute taught us that it doesn't make very much difference, but the jury is still out on it but I suppose better safe than sorry.

Had the first of my exams yesterday, am going to reserve judgement on how it went though - they threw us a couple of curve balls...Got a few weeks till the next pair, so I'm having a fun time too...

Good luck with the exams mate.

Right, we have the dentist, we have a forum vet, a forum policeman, web designers, photographers and computer techies. We've people who'll answer any mechanical question.

What other professions do we need on here to cover all help and advice?

Any lawyers? Doctors?

Politicians? Shocked

I've had several teeth removed in the past 3 years due to weak enamel and I never stopped smoking for it, before or after. Not had a single problem.

I've quit smoking now mind Very Happy

Every time I came out of the dentists after having a wisdom tooth removed I went straight to the pub, ordered a pint then went and had a smoke as I fucking hate dentists...Never had a problem with it...

For all things bright and holy DO NOT SMOKE, I did and got dry socket and it was worse than any toothache I had before had to go to A&E and get what smelt like tea tree oil and gauze fitted.

as said by others didnt bother them but its agony if it does.

put a patch on Thumbs Up

Porbably best not to smoke, even tho its a few days after you wont feel the benefits.
I had one a day after a hernia op, managed to drags and it made me feel like shite.

About the hot drinks. It's unbelievable just how effective anesthetic can be. I once had a tooth fixed, and didn't remember to turn off my bad habit of biting the skin on the inside of my bottom lip. Basically I ended up biting off a piece the size of a fingernail Shocked Hurt a few hours later I tell ya!
