 |
|
Just had a new Pilot Power rear fitted this afternoon. £120 fitted to bike which I thought was fairly reasonable
Now, as this is the first new rear I've had, how do I go about scrubbing it in properly. By this I mean how many miles does it take?, should I take it on some twisties to generate a decent amount of lean for the shoulders etc.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated
Oh, and yes, my 'chicken strips' would put KFC to shame

Put the bike on a paddock stand or something or anything so the rear tire is in the air.
Put in gear so the tire spins.
Low grit sandpaper on the tyre, all over for a few mins.
Good to go. ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

You've got the same problem as every other sixteen year old boy in the world. You clearly think you know everything.
If you want to scrub in your tyre that way then please do so, however don't come crying to us on here once you've lost all of your fingers. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

You don't mention the front. Also, apparently this gets particles of sand into your tyre, which will prematurely wear it.
On track a tyre can be scrubbed in well enough to give full-race-pace after not much more than a mile, given an initially-warm tyre. The trick, as with anything bike-related, is to build up a little at a time.
So try a slow speed/lean angle and increase it a little at a time and you can be using all the tyre very quickly, providing you do it progressively and 'listen' for feedback to make sure you're not pushing too fast. |

Had a new rear tyre a month ago and was told 100 miles to scrub in, not to brake or corner too hard and keep it smooth. Maybe they were just making sure if everyone else is ok after 20 miles ____________________ 'The core of a man's spirit comes from new experiences'

Tyre fitters always say "100 miles" as an arse covering.
As G says 100 motorway miles will have scrubbed the middle in a treat, but not the edges.
It should be done after about 20-30 miles on twisty riding most of the time, and on track it takes a couple of laps. ____________________ My Flickr |

250 miles to be on the safe side. I usually don't use my full acceleration before that point. Be progressive in the corners and take them a bit slower than you normally would and you'll be fine. Just pretty much repeating what G says.
Sand/silicon carbide paper is silly. The release agent will probably have permeated sufficiently deep into the leather, so even if you've taken off the sheen, it'll still be slippery. With small glass particles embedded into the rubber, you're effectively artificially heating up the tyre through the addition friction when the particles move around at high speeds ... well that's my take on it.
Don't worry about yer chicken strips mate ... get the running in sorted after 250 miles and any remaining release agent will have reacted with the heat. ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

I got to about the 100 km mark after getting a new Dunlop Qualifier fitted on my dad's FZ6 whilst I was back for Easter and then I got bored so started leaning more and more and didn't have any problems ____________________ wizzzard wrote: Imagine God just stopping by, tidying your front room up and then quietly letting himself out again. 5 miles max and the releasing agent is gone. I can't belive I'm seeing recomendations of 250miles, 100 miles etc...
The releasing agent will be off the tyre in about 100 meters to be honest, but the extra distance is to warm the tyre so you can lean it comfortably to get the sides scrubbed.

I usually find that once youve left the tyre fitters, got into national speed limit roads, done a few clutch ups and had a few wheelspins the rear is more or less ready to roll, some progressive braking attempts get the front up to speed, then a bit of roundabout surfing and some other small roads with lefts in and I feel good. All in all about 15-20miles and your done.
Ive only done about 50-60k miles over the years so Im still a bit green on this sort of thing... |

What's all this sandpaper jobby-gob? this ain't fnking carpentry class.
Just ride the bike around some average speed smooth twisty roads progressively leaning more as you go. I've scrubbed a new set of tyres in within 20 miles (about 1/4 each side of the rear).. Just don't go stupid and you should have no probs. If it was wet I probably wouldn't even try to scrub them in that much, but then, I'm a pussy! |
