Hi all
I have thinned hammerite in the past with white spirits and used it in a spray gun but the white spirits make a LOT of vapour when spraying.

I ordered some hammerite brush cleaner / thinners from ebay but the plank sent RUSTINS BRUSH CLEANER.

Does anyone know how well this thins hammerite and whats its like to spray when thinned with this.

Cant really try it incase i need to send it back....

If its cellulose it should be ok. Youll get a lot of fumes regardless of what kind of thinners you use really, its all nasty stuff.

Ok from reading the tin i know it contains white spirits, I've seen a few websites advising extra clean-up precautions because it contains silicon and can "fish eye" your next paint job.

Ive found a data sheet but can i f**k determine what is in it!
https://www.hammerite.com/lv/data_sheets/SDSHM101_hammerite_direct_to_rust_metal_paint_smooth_2.pdf

If anyone can decipher this and tell me what its base is id really appreciate it!

P.S Rustins brush cleaner has no mention of being able to thin cellulose, although I do have rustins cellulose thinners some where....

Proper Hammerite thinners is pretty much pure xylene.

I know this because I've used pure xylene thinners before and "official" Hammerite thinners smells exactly the same.

White spirit or acetone will NOT do the job properly.

You can buy it in B&Q but they keep it behind the counter.

I'd have to disagree with stinkwheel, there, last time I tried (and it was a few years ago, it may have changed with COSH type rules) xylene turned hammerite to snot and acetone thinned it.

Suck it and see, I guess, you can probably find somebody to give up their nail varnish remover for a test. Smile

I have a can of hammerite thinners right here, smells nothing like acetone.

I suppose the trick would be to buy hammerite thinners Wink.

On further, not very extensive, research (like the first link off google when you search for hammerite thinners) it does actually contain acetone but it's mostly naptha and also contains butyl acetate.

That being the case. The afore-mentioned petrol isn't a bad bet.

As said I have thinned it with white spirits before and it thinned fine sprayed fine apart from a lot of vapour but dried matt and looked crap.....

The guy is sending me some hammerite thinners anyway ( i got to keep the rustins! ) Thumbs Up

In regards to the hammerite thinners they contain

75-100% NAPHTHA hydrotreatd heavy petroleum
2.5-10% ACETONE
1-2.5% N-Butyl Acetate

I couldnt find a data sheet for the rustins thinners to compare....
