Some weeks ago, dapthechap posted a 'Free Bike' ad and since I fancied a project, I stuck my name in the ring and he was kind enough to let me have it. So one quick van ride to Slough and fifty quid later (I thought a token donation was in order) I had Rusty in my garage.

Rusty is a 1997 CBR600FV. She may well have started out as a race/track bike but spent some years on the road, got binned and resprayed, developed an intermittent electrical fault, a coolant leak and spent the last 3 years sat in a garage.

So the mission is simple - get her running and get her MOT'd for the minimum outlay.

Essentially, everything that could be dried out, rusted up or seized solid, is. So far I've done:

Arrow Syphoned out the skanky old petrol, lobbed some new stuff in and with a jumpstarter and some persuasion she started. Oil change, and a new battery and now she's first time off the button, if a little lumpy idling. Oil change.

Arrow Extreme violence to get brake calipers off. Attacked them with a drill to get the old pads out, mucho cleaning and new pins to reassemble. Got a semblence of braking sorted with old shagged fluid, since it's not pissing everywhere I'll treat her to some new stuff this weekend. Aim is to get reasonably effective braking - will look to improve it later on.

Arrow Fixed the coolant leak. Simple case of removing the hose at the leaky joint, cleaning it all up and putting it back on nice and tight. Obviously this let all the coolant out, so she's had a flush and some new stuff.

Arrow Removed the hugger/chain guard with an angle grinder. There was no saving those fixings.

Arrow Wheel bearings were shagged - dried out and lumpy. Took two people, more extreme violence and a blow torch to get them changed. Wheels now spin freely and she can be pushed around the garage without back spasms.

Arrow New chain and sprockets, and cush drive rubbers for added value. Front sprocket nut was as much of a pain as the photo suggests - lots of penetrating oil, freeze 'n' release and about three batteries-worth of impact wrench action.

Arrow Liberally sprayed silver paint around to make her look a bit less scabby. If she's a keeper, I'll do a better job.

Hopefully get the remaining things (fairling and fiddly bits) done this weekend, my seat'll arrive from ebay and then I can take a punt at an MOT. If I can scrape a pass and actually take her for a run or two then I can get a better idea of where to go next (and possibly run slap bang into the 'intermittent electrical fault').

Certainly looks like you've got your work cut out.

Has it been stood for ages then?

If you have a project bike for two months and it passes an MOT, when both of my projects are dead I'm going to be very grumpy for a whole long time and I might even go and sit in the corner and sulk. That is how grumpy I'll be.

Meanie.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I'm staying firmly in denial about that. While the downpipes are rusted to shit, it seems to be largely surface and they appear to be fairly solid underneath - no holes and no blowing so far. So I'm tempted just to wire brush them, slap on a couple of coats of BBQ paint (without removing them) and ignore them for now.

I'm taking the same approach with anything I can get away with *not* undoing for now - my twisted logic suggests that anything vaguely connected to the engine will benefit from being heated and cooled a few times (ie. using the bike) before trying to undo it. So stuff like spark plugs etc I'm gonna leave and hope they free up a bit with use.

Pah, my neighbours are used to me! Though I did stick the can on for later running and for a quick run up the end of the road and back (which with no seat and about 5psi in the tyres was rubbish).

Whether it's a 'keeper' or not depends if I like it. If it's fun on the road then that's cool. But if it doesn't grab me particularly as a bike then the fun was the spannering and when the spannering's done I'll probably sell it for the cost of the parts I used to get it sorted.

No sense keeping it sat in a garage going rusty again if I prefer riding my other bikes, better to let someone get a bargain on a bike they'll enjoy.

Nice project there. You using David Silvers for any spares etc?

The good thing about the older 'steely' CBRs is that the engines are pretty tough. Hope it doesn't cost the Earth...

Thumbs Up

re:- studs - good idea, just what I was thinking, could even soak studs/nuts with WD etc when you get to your destination and switch off - a few times.

I'm dreading the day when I come to start up my TZR125 pit bike.
The engine has been stood for over a year. I've filled it with WD40 to help with any rust and corrosion.

Its going to smoke. Laughing

You have a garage attached to your house with an internal door! You don't even need to set foot outside to get there!

Cold and wet doesn't come into it!

Use it at Cadwell Very Happy

But the garage is so full of other bikes (including a big stupid Beemer that I can't move by myself) that you need to extend out onto the drive. Where it was tipping it down.

And it was cold. So I cleaned the bathroom instead.

Yes, I'm a wuss. But a wuss with a very clean bathroom. Mr. Green

I say.
What's this in my garage?
It appears to be a silver CBR6. How did that get there?
