Some weeks ago, dapthechap posted a 'Free Bike' ad and since I fancied a project, I stuck my name in the ring and he was kind enough to let me have it. So one quick van ride to Slough and fifty quid later (I thought a token donation was in order) I had Rusty in my garage.

Rusty is a 1997 CBR600FV. She may well have started out as a race/track bike but spent some years on the road, got binned and resprayed, developed an intermittent electrical fault, a coolant leak and spent the last 3 years sat in a garage.
So the mission is simple - get her running and get her MOT'd for the minimum outlay.

Essentially, everything that could be dried out, rusted up or seized solid, is. So far I've done:
Syphoned out the skanky old petrol, lobbed some new stuff in and with a jumpstarter and some persuasion she started. Oil change, and a new battery and now she's first time off the button, if a little lumpy idling. Oil change.
Extreme violence to get brake calipers off. Attacked them with a drill to get the old pads out, mucho cleaning and new pins to reassemble. Got a semblence of braking sorted with old shagged fluid, since it's not pissing everywhere I'll treat her to some new stuff this weekend. Aim is to get reasonably effective braking - will look to improve it later on.
Fixed the coolant leak. Simple case of removing the hose at the leaky joint, cleaning it all up and putting it back on nice and tight. Obviously this let all the coolant out, so she's had a flush and some new stuff.
Removed the hugger/chain guard with an angle grinder. There was no saving those fixings.
Wheel bearings were shagged - dried out and lumpy. Took two people, more extreme violence and a blow torch to get them changed. Wheels now spin freely and she can be pushed around the garage without back spasms.
New chain and sprockets, and cush drive rubbers for added value. Front sprocket nut was as much of a pain as the photo suggests - lots of penetrating oil, freeze 'n' release and about three batteries-worth of impact wrench action.
Liberally sprayed silver paint around to make her look a bit less scabby. If she's a keeper, I'll do a better job.
Hopefully get the remaining things (fairling and fiddly bits) done this weekend, my seat'll arrive from ebay and then I can take a punt at an MOT. If I can scrape a pass and actually take her for a run or two then I can get a better idea of where to go next (and possibly run slap bang into the 'intermittent electrical fault').

Nice project there. You using David Silvers for any spares etc?
The good thing about the older 'steely' CBRs is that the engines are pretty tough. Hope it doesn't cost the Earth...

A mate's VTR is taking on that "titanic at the bottom of the atlantic" look while being stood in a garage so I wouldn't worry too much. As long as it was cheap and nothing's bent it should be ok once rescusitated. ____________________ 18:54:48 Rob Fzs: jews don't give away stuff for free

I was thinking are you going to go with any theme or just restore back to "as is".
Would be cool to get some custom farings on it or something with a crazy paint job |

Ignore how bad this sounds but leave them rusty parts in vinegar overnight and they'll be sparkling! Just make sure to clean the vinegar off properly after |
