Posted: 20:58 - 09 Oct 2009 Post subject: Costs for Valve and Carb checks? |
 |
|
I'd like to get my valve clearances checked and carbs synch'd or should I say, need to!
I havn't got the kit to do this myself and don't think I'd be too confident doing this anyway
What sort of money should I be expecting to pay to get this done by a garage on average (not dealer prices, Kawasaki Newcastle charge a fortune )?
ZX6R F3
Thanks in advance ____________________ ZX6R F3 |

Cheers Titz, I didn't think it would be too cheap like
I'm fine with changing plugs, oil + filter changes etc but when it comes to engine internals I don't like to touch it
I'm gonna give a local garage a ring in the morning and see what he quotes me, his price for the last lot of work he did was good, £116 for new fork oil and seals, re-grease SHB's, re-grease throttle grip and lube cables and an MOT and that included the labour and VAT - in contrast, Kawasaki Newcastle wanted £175 just to do the fork oil and seals ____________________ ZX6R F3 |

it really is a very simple job, especially on the later model kawasaki's, the only bugger is having shims to hand..
take it to a small bike shop, rather that somewhere big,
and if you can all the fairings off and it ready to go, that'll drop the price,
i personally would be pissed off if it was more than 50quid to do valve clearances, its a half hour job ____________________ the humans are dead

I was pretty sure the shims are under the buckets on a zx6r therefore the cams need to come out. Thats after checking all the clearances and working out the difference in gaps etc. Locating the right shims etc etc. Reinstalling the cams and cct, Rechecking the clearances, Refitting the camcover, Airbox tank etc. Good hours graft (or more) there for someone who knows what there doing (and is doing it properly) |

it appears your right reguarding bucket over shim, obviously the 6's didnt benefit from the later model zx7rs system,
still that just makes it like the early zxr750,
and i managed to do my valve clearances in half an hour,
(as said not including taking all the shit off to get to the cams) the valve clearance and shim changes itself doesnt take that long to do.
i guess we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one,
as i don't current;y own a il4 i can't prove i can do it in that time.

But thats like saying you can run the 100metres in 9 seconds flat........but doesnt include the first 20metres or the last 20metres.
Or on the flip side saying you had sex for half an hour but not counting the 27 minutes of titty fondling
Anyways, I wouldn't let you near my bike you gash bas*tard

thats nothing like that at all,
doing the valve clearances is not. taking fairings off and removing the tank, its taking the rocker cover off,
then sliding a feeler guage under the cam 16 times,
then unbolting the tensionor, then unbolting the cams replace the shims that need to be replaced, then put cams back in,
its hardly a hard or particuly technical job,
and to be fair i wouldn't do any job for a smart arse know it all cock like yourself, so really you have nothing to worry about do you ____________________ the humans are dead

As mentioned above, the longest part is removing the tank, airbox, cam cover etc... to get to them. Checking the clearances is pretty easy really, doesn't take long at all.
I did have a spreadsheet that calculated what your clearances should be and what size shims to put in if they did need changing. I'll see if I can dig it out, it saves you loads of time! (might even have got if from on here?!)...
As I dont ride my bike over winter, I tend to remove the engine to do my clearances and give the motor a thorough check over and clean.

To do a check of the valve clearances shouldn't be any more than an hour from any dealership, bearing in mind that almost all dealers charge a minimum of an hours labour. I can do a valve clearance check and carb balance in under an hour, assuming the engine is already hot.
The ZX6R exhaust and inlet shims are the same diameter too, so if you are doing your own, you can swap shims around, assuming that there are some that are the suitable thickness.
Cheers
