|
|
Hi, it's only October and it seems though it's already approaching 0c where I am (middle of France)
I have to ride right through winter and every morning I tell myself I need to get kitted out and I always finish the journey with no feeling in my fingers and one hell of a shiver.
I've been looking on eBay for stuff. I have already bought this jacket:
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270463553489&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
And this balaclava:
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220486929234&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
I wear a scarf around my neck but it doesn't really keep the wind out. I've looked for neck warmers but they all seem very thin. I need something I can ride in sub zero temperatures in.
My legs are fairly well protected by the fairings but I might get some trousers when it gets even colder.
Thanks. |

Get something made of Merino wool, you'll be roasting in five seconds
I think Millets have thermals made of the stuff. It's like putting on a pressure cooker. ____________________ Visit GhostBikes.com today for Motorcycle Helmets and Motorcycle Accessories |

Topic has been covered many times before.
Basically go for layers of clothing rather than one thick item.
For ideas click here or this thread with a pic of stinkwheel's winter clothing (he's from where the haggis roam free so maybe all year clothing )
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/clothing.jpg
FWIW silk (thermal) underwear is very good but has limited life. Just don't get caught looking too closely in the lingerie department
My personal favourite for winter gloves are the lobster type - covered before if you click this thread.

Since no-one has yet addressed the actually question OP asked.
What you need is a polar buff, it is like one of those thin neck warmers but with a fleesy bit attached.
One of these, https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/POLAR-BUFF-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ130337457259QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Sporting_Goods_Skiing_Snowboarding_Clothing_LE?hash=item1e58b7c46b.
If it is really cold I sometimes put a shemag around my neck too (army issue scarf that has become fashionable recently)
https://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=shemag You should be able to get them from a market cheaper, down here I can get 4 for a fiver. Shemags are also brilliant for riding in the summer on there own.
The HG 2 finger gloves are widely known to be the best winter gloves.

As Calyx said handguards are the best thing for keeping your hands warm but may be hard to fit depending on your bike. Muffs are ok but I find they interfer with the controls. Hand guards combined with heated grips and those gloves will keep your hands warm all through the winter. I have never found the needs for thermal socks get a decent set of Goretex boots and you should be fine. My Alpine Star SMX4 WP are brilliant. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. 2 pairs of tracksuit bottoms will keep your legs warm through anything.
I have a set of leathers which I can wear over them too for protection. If it's very cold I wear that and when I get to work I put overalls in place of my leathers (I work outside often standing still for hours at a time so can get very cold). Obviously the top pair get a bit dirty and the bottom pair a bit sweaty, so every day I wear a clean pair underneath and put the previous day's 'under' ones on top of the clean ones so my wife doesn't go mad about the washing. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I have the polar Buff but the buff bit was too tight for me so i cut it off and use the polar tec bit as a snood , it sits nicely in my jacket and up my neck to the helmet without choking me and keeps the chill off my neck.

I was riding through Europe recently - only hit a low of 6 degrees in the north, however on one hand I only had a motocross glove and a silk liner. Never really had /that/ cold hands.
Muffs with the under-grip bar warmers were fine with this combination. Going for those two as well as a glove liner and proper winter gloves would do it. I found the warmers seemed to help keep the rest of my arms warm too - I wondered if maybe it warmed up the blood a bit which then returned up the arm slightly warming the surrounding arm.
I had an aerostich roadcrafter one piece (highly reccomended; takes under thirty seconds to put on when you get used to it). Under that, once I noticed it was a bit chilly, I wore five thinish layers - a silk 'thermal' base layer, a tshirt, a long sleeved t-shirt, a 'Norwegian shirt' and another fleece. Seemed to work ok - this was riding a trail bike with an upright riding position and a pretty tiny screen.
Only pic I've got up of the ensemble so far isn't great:
https://gees.zenfolio.com/img/v1/p425948804-4.jpg
They do come in less 'noticable' colours.
I didn't find my legs were getting cold with just trousers under the suit, though I had more layers if needed. The bike has a quite wide long-range tank and I had pretty warm socks on under the large motocross boots. |

my textiles are so warm i dont need loadsa underlayers.
i just wear a t-shirt under my textiles and as long as i've got my thermal inner zipped in im toasty
havent bothered putting the inner in my trousers yet but then i have my jeans underneath anyway
other than that i just have a comfy to pull up over my mouth/nose and some silk inners for my gloves as i hate my winter ones (damn warm but you cant feel anything with em on)
IF wearing my leathers in this kinda weather (like i was yesterday) i have full base layers top and bottoms, long johns and a long sleeve top over my base layers. kept me reasonably warm but i think i'll be investing in some windstopper (edz ones) mid layers as the wind chill seemed to be my biggest enemy ____________________ CBR954RR - Daily toy

Regarding neckwarmers, you can get thicker ones but they aren't as effective as a thinner one. It seems you can't buy a knitted type cotton one, probably because when wet they retain water and potentially make you very cold!
My necktube is called 'The Tube'. May be able to get some info on it on Google. It's acrylic, so has the thickness that a knitted type one would have. However, my mind isn't made up, as although it's warm to wear, it doesn't seem to be very windproof and is hard to fit under a jacket collar. ____________________ H100 Breaking for spares |

Probably not recommended you keep it in the shitter tho if you intend to stick your face in it
Cheers for that, my flat has low energy bulbs everywhere, whilst the showerroom has a purpose built light and the white basen, tallied with an old 2 megapixel phone at night its the place to be for photos ...
I spose i can buy some velco to enable the demister to work / stay secure.
Anyway the gortex neckwarmers which are the dogs are back in stock ... 5 quid ...
