Looking to get into offroading, buying a good bike low price

I really want to start getting into offroading and just need to get me the the bike, im after anything 125cc upwards and cant pay more that £800. It also needs to be road legal as i would need to ride it to fields or green lanes, etc.
Any advice on what to buy and what to look out for?

Bikes like the XR250/KLX250/KLX300/DR350/XT350 are well worth a look. However, if you want a bike that will be the most fun and most flexible on the dirt, I’d go for a 2 stroke enduro bike. You’ll have to be a bit more careful at this price point (though I’ve seen plenty of good ones around £1k). I’d go 250cc+ from the last 15 years or so. Bikes like the KTM EXC, Gas Gas EC, Suzuki RMX, Honda CR-enduro. These bikes weigh very litte, have lots of low-down grunt, mid-range and top-end too if you’re brave enough to turn the throttle all the way.
A good mid-point between the serious enduro bikes and the more road-biased 4 strokes is bikes like the CRM250, KMX220/250, which offer pretty light weight bikes along with reasonable power and in a lot of cases premix.
Personally I’d avoid the 125s – they are capable enough of off road, but the bigger bikes tend to be a lot better at the same price point.

I've seen honda crm's going for £800, 250 that is, 125's seems to pickup abit more money because its learner legal, i think a crm will do anyone nicely

I think it depends on how serious you want your off roading to be. If you're spending 95% of your time on lanes then maybe a 2 stroke's a better bet but if you want to use it as a commuter too then I would go 4 stroke.

Im still looking, cant find anything at the moment, saw a honda dominator nx650 on ebay, anyone know much about them? are they good offroad?

The nx650 is very heavy, so not ideal for off-roading. The majority of the 650 bikes are a bit too heavy - the DR600 and KLR600 are worth a look and in your price range; think the rest of the big ones in your price range are a bit portly.

Just adding my 2p; if youre considering a 2 stroke, a kdx 200 might appeal. Mine's ancient ('93) but its claimed dry weight is 102 kg, with a claimed 38 bhp.

I've spent out on a replate with piston + rings, and it was simple enough that even I managed to strip and rebuild it myself. Previous owner rebuilt the suspension, and its spot on for trail riding.
So for less than 800 quid, I've got a sorted bike with tax and mot

Reputed to be bullet proof, and apparently some have lasted over 20,000 miles without a rebuild, but could be an exaggeration.

CRM250 is what I'd go for, or to be different I'd probaby get a DT200WR or WR200 as they ate quite small and agile trail bikes
