hi,
was riding the mito today and i was giving it some revvs when i noticed (pulled in to the garage for fuel) that the temp had climbed to 110 degrees...

at this point i was about 2 mile away from my house luckly and waited for it to cool down to around 80 ish degrees and started it up again and in the space of about 400 yards it had gone back up to 100 degrees.

when i eventurly got home i left the bikek there for 30 mins(off) and the temp meter was still reading 60 degrees after that 30 mins...so i started it up and even idoling the tempreture of the engine was shooting up and in the space of 2 mins it had climed to 80ish degrees!

now what isit? is it the thermostat or could it be the water mumps packed up?

cheers all. Thumbs Up

I would check for an airlock in your rad/ any leaks. If all is fine, I would then have a go at checking the water pump is working ok. Sorry I am not much help, its late and I've just got back from a new years party.

Im totally dishwashered Wink

Make absolutely sure theres plenty of coolant in the rad an expansion tank (its something that may have been overlooked in the whole 'oh cock its really heating up' moment) After checking that I'd agree with the above, if it was my bike the order in which I would check would be;

1; Airlock in the cooling system, this can be fixed really quickly by bleeding the system.

2; Make sure theres no silty buildup in the pipes, this would reduce coolant flow, thereby not providing the full cooling effect

3; Faulty thermostat, if it isn't opening then hot coolant will be stuck circulating round the engine and not doing its job. Take it out and then see if the problem persists. If this doesn't help, then it's time to look at the pump being faulty.

4; Broken waterpump. I'd take the housing cover off, and see if the impeller (i think thats what it is) can be taken out , if it can, then its either snapped the impeller shaft, or the drive gear on the back has come loose. If you can't take it out, then the gear on the back may be damaged (stripped the teeth off, chunk of the gear missing etc)

I think thats everything covered, might be worth giving your system a flush out while your working on it, keep it in tip top condition Smile

Not quite everything. The timing may be slightly out, it could be running lean (developed a leak). Pull the plug to give you a clue.

Get to your nearest dealer.

Other than that, You'll be paying over the odds for a part off an Ebay seller if one will ship one out special delivery but it's still asking a lot.

Might also be worth checking the cylinder head is bolted nice and tightly. Thumbs Up

Afraid beggars can't be choosers, gotta get stuff from where it is.

I mentioned cylinder head since a mate I used to ride with had several instances when his temp gauge shot up and the bike would steam out, often near causing a seize and no bleeding or refill ever did the trick; we found out the end cause was a small hole in cylinder head where a nut had worked loose and created the tiniest gap around the top end gasket; this made water from the coolant system leak out and the engine get worringly hot..
