Hi,

Got a RXS100 and its great but think the gearbox is on its way out as keeps jumping out of gear (every 10mins or so).

When I brought the bike I got a spare engine with it so my question is, providing the gearbox is much better condition in this one, will this sort the problem?

Is there anything else that could be causing it to jump out of gear?

Thanks

Is it just jumping from fifth to fourth, or does it happen in all gears?

This is a fairly common problem on some RXS100s. I encountered the problem once and it seemed to be caused by the selector drum (which is to say, I replaced the selector drum and never had the problem again). Even low mileage bikes can be affected.

Obviously putting the other motor in would sort the problem. Keep the one you're using now for spares.

Yes it is mainly jumping from 5th gear to 4th.

Not going to swap the engine just planning on taking out the old gearbox as the piston isnt all that old (and outer case of current one is much better condition).

Where did you buy a new selector drum from, Wemoto?

Thanks for the help Thumbs Up

Yep, the 5th to 4th jump means it's unlikely to be the gearbox itself at fault.

I had an engine in pieces that someone gave me years ago and used the selector drum and selector forks from that. There was scoring in the drum tracks in places, so I figured that was the most likely cause of the problem.

If it was me, I think I'd have the top end off the engine you're using, plus the clutch and flywheel covers, and put them on the other motor. You just have to hope that one is OK Neutral

Thanks for the reply. Going to spend a few sunny afternoons in summer having a look at both gearboxes and seeing if I can make a "best of both".

Is it a tricky job to do? Had a look in the haynes and seems ok..

Very simple job. The RXS has about as basic a motor as it's possible to get (probably why they're so tough). You can get away without any special tools, with care. It's so light that you can easily whip it out and slot it back in again without assistance.

My previous motor was made up of the best bits from four different ones and ran fine.
