i'm thinking about buying this:

https://users.autoexposure.co.uk/vehicle.cfm?Account=AETA85844&Style=2&Id=AETV35551418&Make=SUBARU&Model=IMPREZA&City=Plymouth

i THINK its the 1.8 turbo, and im going for a test drive and possible buy on thursday.

is it FWD, RWD or AWD
things to look out for? its pretty low milage for its age.
is the price right? looks pretty good nick.
what does WRX mean? is it actually one or is it just a sticker

https://imageserver.autoexposure.co.uk/autoedit/AETA85844/AETV35551418_1b.jpg

i'd like to know as much as i can about it, as i cant find much because i dont know what to look for as theres so many different models. all i know is it's a 1993 L model.

Scoobys are AWD, certainly the WRX and STi models are.

Get yourself on Scoobynet.com for all things Subaru. Why do you want you buy it out of interest?

it just seems more practical than the other car i wanted (ford cougar).
roof bars, tow hitch etc.
plus it has power, but not speed which i suppose is better for towing.
if its 4wd instead of 2, even better.

matthirst... if it was for that reason i'd get a proper one.

anyway, less questions more facts please. so its definately a 4wd? will it have a selector between 2wd and 4wd or is it just permanent 4wd? x

There are no 1.8 turbo's. The turbo's are all 2L or bigger (the later ones and certain model older ones).

Subaru dont make 2WD cars, every car they make is 4WD.

Like someone said above, look on Scoobynet, loads of info on there.

Thumbs Up

Were there some Jap market FWD only models with smaller engines? I recall someone mentioning a 1.6 FWD only impreza on here ages ago.

Yes, AWD.
Beware though, it will be very thirsty.

Years ago i had a Subaru GL estate, just for pootling around the farm in. It was desperate on fuel, went quite well though considering it was a shit heap

How annoying! That thing will do about 15 to the gallon and pollute about 4 times as much as my car does and what do the government do? They make my tax more expensive!

Import WRX with circa 220bhp standard. Not that fast but nippy enough. Nice and driveable - understeer a bit on standard ARB setups but that can be fixed. Comfy enough inside, albeit a bit basic and low rent. Reasonably civilised on a run.

Very practical, if left relatively standard or tuned mildly but PROPERLY it will be relatively reliable too. Not as thirsty as you'd think - you should find you'll get 25-35mpg depending on your driving style and type of journey.

Good cars - I was considering one so I can get my MTB's up on the roof bars rather than having to sling them in the back of the 'teg.

For the money - 1500 quid - it's a bargainous utility vehicle

THATS what im after... first hand experience.
sounds perfect for my needs then. i want a work horse that can drive in harsher than normal environments.

i dont want it to be tuned or anything. i know well enough that cars arent fast.

It'll do you right by that, no worries.

Spares are fairly easy to come by nowadays too because they're fairly common. Just keep up the servicing, even if it's home servicing, don't skimp on oil changes etc - you don't have to pay fortunes for good quality oil nowadays, can get 5L of fully synthetic Fuchs oil for less than a score.

Best of luck with it

I owned an Impreza WRX for 18 months.

Good cars, but you won't get insurance unless you're old and smell of wee. Tyres are expensive as you can't really replace them in pairs.

Fuel? 22mpg on a good day, and the non turbo ones don't do much better. If its a non turbo GX model it will have about 130bhp and the same weight and 4x4 gear as the WRX. It will be glacially slow.

My 220bhp WRX was quick enough for me, but it is the fuel that did me in in the end.

Now I've got a BMW 325i which makes about 20bhp less but is much better on fuel and cost £800 to buy. BMW parts are cheaper than Subaru ones by a LONG way, and the BMW is easy to work on.

The Subaru was impossible, you need tiny japanese hands to replace the spark plugs which cannot be reached from the top of the engine, so you have to jack the car up to get to them.

They are good cars if you can afford to maintain them, but if its a non turbo or you're trying to run it on a budget buy something else.

just got back from my test drive.
i'll admit, i was impressed. considering the biggest engined car i've driven is a pug 405 1.9 diesel.

i made a point of not telling the guy i hadnt driven a car since passing my test just over a month ago Wink

its as tidy in the flesh as it is in the advert.
drives nice.

it has a few horrible bits on like a boost gauge, a really erratic fuelling gauge to tell if its rich or lean that only seems to work when your at constant rpm, and some other gauge i didnt actually look at.

sounds sweet as a nut at the engine end, but has a gash exhaust on that i've requested has a stock one put on.

You've requested a standard exhaust? Boost gauge is horrible?

Do you want a vagina to go with that?

Clearly you aren't cut out for imprezza ownership, sorry pal.

I'm guessing Matt doesn't want to look like a dick driving a car with tokyo drift style 'gauges' lighting the car up like a christmas tree, a gay loud exhaust that sounds like everyone elses impreza + bling stickers for that super rally effect Laughing

standard unfucked subaru's are the smartest by far.
