.. I'm thinking about a cheap jap cruiser as a uni hack. I know there are better choices but I'm a ponce.

I seem to remember there were a few that were really cheap second hand for what they were (don't say it - free would be too dear), but I can't remember for shit what models I'm thinking of.

Any suggestions for cheap jap cruisers, then?

My mate, just bought a Yam XV750SE 1981 for 250 quid.

Tax and MOT'd and all in running order.

As its a Yammy SE model the cruiseryness is quite mild so you won't be joining the gayvison hordes just yet.

Ive had a ride on it and was going down the road with a massive grin on my face! My mate too loves it and thinks its awesome, I normally ride a ZZR and he rides a CBR6.

Oh the fun doesn't stop there.....

So far the solenoid is fine, its more the fact that there is a huge knocking from the starter motor and that it doesn't release properly after the engine has started. I don't think the starter motor has a proper sprag clutch but more a worm gear type engagy system so I'm not sure how to fix it.

I think a trip to the local "alternator and starter" shop is called from for a bit of "can you come and listen to this mate" with the no doubt knowledgeable old boy inside.

The Maxim is good but unfortunately they are hard to come by. Being a four cylinder, it is basically a Virago but not dog slow. If you do see one, avoid the 550 as it is chain driven, which is one of the biggest advantages.

You could consider XJ Diversions and pre-Divvys as, although they're not cruisers, they are an evolution of this type of bike. You will also be able to pick one up a much newer one for the same price as something like a Virago. OK, you won't have the cruiser looks, but you are after a hack, right?
