Do I need a relay?

I realise that if I don't and leave something plugged into it my battery will drain, but as long as I only plug things in when the engine is running, is there any need?

Ideally I just want to run two wires to the socket with a switch and fuse in-line but I'm guessing the switch could burn out from the power thus me needing a relay.

Another option is to just run two wires to the socket with an in-line fuse. Would a 13amp fuse be good enough?

Bearing in mind the low current things that are normally plugged into lighter sockets, You don't even need a relay if you had it on a switched live ...

Super. Only thing I'll be plugging into it is a PDA and GPS receiver and occasionally a AA battery charger.

No, you don't need a relay.

A fuse and two wires straight to the battery is fine. You only need a relay if you want to switch a high current with a low (ish) one.

Yeah indeed.

Pretty much anything you've got knocking about would do. 10A would probably be the most ideal, but if you have only got a 13A or have only got a 5A then they're fine.

If you're buying one especially though I'd probably get a 10A.

Inline 5amp in mine. Directly to terminals. No problems when not being used.

Fitted and working.

Mocked it up and checked I could still close my seat:

Then found a bracket which I cut, twisted, bent and attached to the socket using a jubilee clip:

That doubled up as the earth.

Found a ring terminal in my toolbox and crimped that on to the wire and attached it to the battery with the 5amp fuse in-line.

Even with the PDA on charge the PV still cycles when the ignition is turned on Thumbs Up
