 Posted: 11:29 - 24 Apr 2010 Post subject: Spare petrol cannister/bottle? |
 |
|
I think i saw a topic about this kind of thing ages ago but couldnt find it.
is there a good sort of cannister/bottlecontainer to carry with you with some petrol in just in case worst comes to worst and your reserve tank runs out?
just to carry with on a day when you know you will be riding a lot but not sure how far and few between the petrol stations are.
any links/ideas welcome
i know petrol is flammable (duh) so i dont think a plastic bottle is best really lol, a jerry can style bottle would be awesome. ____________________ Yamaha RXS 100 > Honda CD 250 > Honda Hornet 600 > Honda CBR 600RR > Yamaha RXS 100 > Kawasaki ZX6R J2 > Yamaha FZ1 |

As far as I know it HAS to legally be in a designated petrol can.
Those plastic ones you get at petrol stations are usually good enough, Hold 5L so one would get you to a petrol station no bother.
Petrol can be quite solvent against some types of plastic, polystyrene etc., so if you're using a different container not designed to carry petrol, watch out and test it first, leave it overnight full and squeeze it in the morning and see if it feels like it's softened. ____________________ My Bikes - - - Royal Enfield 500 with sidecar, VFR800, CBR600FX,

I was thinking about that for touring, maybe carrying a 5L jerry can on the bike but I think that might be a bit overkill? Apparently you can get 1.5L ones which I suppose would be quite handy and more practical. ____________________ My Project - Honda CBR 600 F2/FM |

A 2L one would be pretty perfect actually, but is it a metal one or not? I would want a little metal one, seems more safe too. And 5L really doesn't take up much space and I would much rather have 50 (or 100 miles in my case) to get to a petrol station.
I once nearly ran out of petrol in Ireland and didn't realise that every petrol station there closes over night. I was passing loads but all of them were closed for 200KM ____________________ will never give up his CG. I look at my fuel gauge more as a progress bar than a fuel gauge.
G: With my GSXR I do often effectively use it as a scooter with a clutch in town.
ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston? |

For ultra emergencies in the middle of nowhere how about a small camping fuel bottle. They're red, aluminium and marked Fuel to keep the health and safety whingers happy. They usually store a litre which on a 125 would get you about 20 miles on my SV 12-14. Probably not very far on a thirsty litre bike.
Bonus if you're camping and have the stove too is it also cooks your food and makes a brew
Nothing beats caution and an emergency tenner under the seat if you've forgot your card tho. ____________________ Prize cunt

I imagine with 62l of fuel onboard + luggage for 1000 mile trip would considerably lower the mpg |

What the smeg do you need so much fuel for? I went to one of the more remote regions of the world Siberia and there was petrol to be had in most places. Granted it was sometimes out the back of cars and there were many fuel stations sans fuel.
but you can get it anywhere and everywhere. Walter found it highup on the Pamir highway and also on the northern Siberian road.
Maciek found Petrol right near Omsuchkchan and Marenga a 2 week mud hell trek to go 200km. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The official Trangia bottle holds a litre and is pretty robust. I use it when on C90 expeditions to supplement the tiny tank. Don't bother on my 600 which holds about 18 litres.
Incidentally, ferry companies can be quite stubborn with regard to extra fuel tanks (even those that are correctly designed and labeled for the job) and may/will refuse to carry you if they spot one. I have experienced this myself in the Highlands.

B&Q also do a green plastic three litre petrol tank in their lawnmower section. ____________________ Yamaha XJ600N |
