Honda CG125 stalling mid-drive

Hi there

I’ve recently gotten into biking, so my mechanical knowledge is only limited at the moment. Having said that, I’m trying to learn quickly.

I own a 2005 reg Honda CG125 at the moment, which has a choke. I think I have the hang of this now.

I half choke it, as suggested by the previous owner when it’s normal temp and full choke when it’s very cold. About a minute of warming the engine up, I take the choke off.

Recently, I’ve been experiencing engine stalls, mid drive, which, as you can imagine is quite dangerous.

Here’s my example:

Been on the road for 10mins, having already warmed the engine beforehand for 1min aprox.
I slow for a roundabout by braking, pull the clutch in and start tapping down the gears. As I slow to around 15mph, the engine cuts out, usually as I’m entering the roundabout or the junction. This means I have to crawl across on the momentum of the bike and start the engine again, at the kerbside.

If anyone has any idea what might be causing this, please let me know.

Edit: I've just done some research and have noticed I may be riding in too high a gear. I've been using 4th or 5th for 30/35mph. Could this be causing the problem?

on a CG...i'd be in around 3rd gear for 30mph tops..
probably in 2nd if it goes that far Razz

i tend to use 4 and 5 as cruising gears..

Saying that...if you are pulling clutch in, your idle screw might need sorting.

When you turn the bike on and its warm does it sound lumpy (i dont think you have a rev counter)
try turning the idle screw in half a turn.

but if your clutch is in and you go back to 15mph in 2nd...it shouldnt stall.. if it stalls with the clutch in, try the idle jet..

if its fine when thats in you might have some crap in the tank/carb thats blocking a jet..

when your bike is warm and sitting still does it sound really lumpy, like its struggling to stay alive?

Yeah, I usually manage that, except on one corner today, when it just wouldnt restart

Idle is set too low. You shouldn't need the choke to start it in this weather.

hmmmm. it sound like it could be a combination of ur idle setting/fueling and/or spark plug have you tryed a new 1? or looked to see what condition your existing one is in?[/quote]

I actually looked at that the other day. Having seen picture examples of degraded ones, I was pleased to see it looked fairly new.

Guys, jut to say, that after 2 days of putting your suggestions into practice, I've had no problems at all.

Must have been a combination of low engine idle speed and high gears at low speeds.
