Try bump starting it. Mates Mito did the same, we bumped it forward in 2nd and it was fine.

happened to me last year on the mtx. (i posted in here, iirc)
scared the f*ck out of me, as i stalled it in the middle of the dual carriage way. (was having timing problems)
the look on the fat birds face in the x5 behind me was a picture. (im sure mines was as well) as i hurtled backwards in 2nd.
had to stall it & ended up doing a accidental wheelie
& then bump it a few times to get it to go forwards.
f*cking hilarious.
cheers,

Ignition timing way too advanced. It's probably not adjustable so my guess is you've had the flywheel off?

It does sound like the timing has slipped, my guess is the flywheel has turned on the crankshaft.

yes, you need to get a timing light on the HT lead ...

But to be frank, the only realistic way the timing can be out is if the flywheel has spun on the crank slightly.

For this to happen, the woodruff key will be broken when/if you take the flywheel off ...

sounds like when you put the piston back on, the conrod when the wrong way,
if you put the bike on the center stand and chuck it in top gear, and turn the back wheel forward in the normal direction of travel, it should reach tdc and correct itself,

bump starting should have the same affect,
really this shouldnt be able to happen unless you bump start the bike back wards, as when you kick the bike over it turns the crank in the right direction

What happens when you try and bump start it forwards.

You should do what Stirlingaz suggested, and remove the flywheel to check if the key is sheared.

Depends on the skirting of the piston to be fair ...

Many pistons are symmetrical, so it would run either way round .. the reason the pistons are direction arrow is so that the ring ends are cunningly located such that they can't catch on a port as they just miss them all!! Cool
