Bought a powercoating gun ages ago, works by negativly charging your part, and shooting positive charged powder so its attracted and sticks to your part
already had a compressor and heat gun so thought id give it a try today, this is a first attempt so not yet perfected.

First hanger part stripped off
https://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o297/Gfxs/DSC00059.jpg
Wet sanded with 120 grit to smooth and remove dirt
https://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o297/Gfxs/DSC00060.jpg
Washed and degreased with white spirit and tissue
https://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o297/Gfxs/DSC00061.jpg
Hung on some threaded bar and preheated with heatgun
https://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o297/Gfxs/DSC00062.jpg
Then shot the colour on, unlike paint once youve got enough power coating on it won't carry on sticking it will just fall off.
https://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o297/Gfxs/DSC00063.jpg
Then heated it up for around 5 mins a side with the heatgun
https://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o297/Gfxs/DSC00065-1.jpg
Finished result
https://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o297/Gfxs/DSC00068.jpg
https://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o297/Gfxs/DSC00070.jpg
Would of got a better finish on them, if i had baked them in a suitable sized box and not used a heatgun for the heat source (suggestions on what to use as a box welcome) and also if i had not spilt most of the power on the floor then scooped it back up!

Comments welcome!

Nah chives, its mildly poisenous so once its been done in the oven you shouldnt eat from it again. Need to actually make a box thatll take 180degrees for 12 minutes comfortably, shame no one can think of anything already on the market for another purpose that would work...
and madforit, im a believer of seasonal cleaning, and it only looks that horrific at the back as id oiled my chain with some valvoline wet lube and its sprayed it all over the rear, will clean her up tommorow maybe....

Need to regulate the temperature, as ive found out with these, too high a temp and you get a little orange peel effect, so needs recoating and slow baking, fire would just get too hot.
If i can find a box ill do this for mates and that, always got people asking for items coated! keep suggestions rolling
cheers

Normal ovens use around 30-40 amps if i remember right,
So may be slightly over loading it wiring it into the ring main, dont wanna set me hoose on fire or anything, or take another feed from the cooker out to the garage not really worth it tho.
Integrated ones are too small as at some point i will be planning to do wheels etc. On the guidance of bacon i have bought a galvanised bin a mini one that should do all i need to do!

a microwave with oven function.

timer and temp controlled.

build a little A frame, with a small baking tray underneath to catch exess powder.

£67 brand new sure you could find something second hand for alot less.

also, a 2kw microwave oven combi is only drawing 8 and a bit amps, so shouldnt blow anything.

Chris its a nice idea, but id like to be able to start experimenting with larger parts such as swing arm, which would have no chance in a oven of that size Laughing

Yeah already know about that company mate,
and ikea dont sell the box anymore, i phoned and got them to check!
and then its too small for what i ultimatly want to end doing which is wheels.

I think the best option would be to pay somebody else to blast and powder coat your larger items. It's not like it's expensive.

Local powder coating shop charges around 100 for 2 bike wheels.
When if i get the setup right i could do it for like half the price easy?

there now around 20-30.
Not bad as long as there not dropped that kills em!
Will see if 1 gun can do the job if not ill mount a 2nd adjacent, although im hoping it shouldnt be too hard, if i prewarm it for 10 mins before hand should be fine.

If you are deffo keen to do a fair bit more I'd make a proper oven I think, you could use a heating element like this;

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CARAVAN-450-WATT-HEATER-ELEMENT-/170487970975?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item27b1dffc9f#ht_500wt_1182

Pop it in the bottom of one of them metal cabinets and then wrap it in fibre glass insulation (or similar)

i am keen,
will that element get hot enough to do 180 degrees in a space big enough for a 18" alloy tho..
i doubt it? and then ill have to make up some theromostat or something as theres no heat control with a element alone..

What if you made a brick box. You can make is as big as you want. Use a couple layers of kiln bricks. Layer it with ceramic tiles. Put a door on it or a lid.
Then use something like a deconstructed electric element heater.

A home 5 element heater should do the job as long as you removed any plastic it shoudln't melt. Fit a rheostat to regulate the power then use a thermometer to calibrate it.

Could do this if doing this takes off, at the moment im builing something short term before i build my own oven,
Ultimatly itll be one in sheet steel, with insulation inside, door, cooker element thermostatically controlled, and the whole unit be on some small caster wheels for wheels etc easier loading...
well thats the plan!

Fair play to you mate, awesome 'go and do it' attitude you have! If more people were like this, maybe places wouldn't charge as much for services.
