Maxxis tyres for R1?

Just about to replace my Dunlop Qualifiers after only getting 1500 miles out of a rear! My local bike garage suggested I try some Maxxis tyres as he reckons they are great tyres for the price and will last a bit longer than the Dunlops.
Can anyone give me some feedback on these tyres?

got a maxxis touring tyre on the rear and so far its been really good - almost bridgestone quality and its and SV650

What do you want from a tyre? Bragging rights down the pub, super sticky glue, mega hard wearing, cheap???

I've had quite a few maxis tyres and they do the job, but they are a budget tyre, so don't expect track tyre sticky or Michelin longevity ...

I expect a lot of wear as its an R1, but 1500 miles on a tyre isnt what i expected. Yes I want grip but a bit more longevity. Its for street use only. Been quoted under £200 a set for these Maxxis fully fitted but am more than happy with other suggestions. As for the Dunlops, many have said they are crap on the R1 but I liked them, just not the wear.

I plan to get them for my GSXR-1000 K1 shortly.

I've yet to see the difference between the majority of tyres (on the road), I think it's all a load of tosh just so people have something to talk about. I'll always buy cheapest. And the Maxxis fit the bill this time round. £125 delivered, fucking bargain.

I just had some fitted for my Hornet 600, bikes still in bits so cant comment quality. Paid £160 for mine fitted to bare rims, but at £120 delivered i would snap them up, then pay the small charge to have them fitted.

I've been using the Supermaxx Sport, on a 1200 Bandit, a GSXR750 SRAD and a GSX1400 ... all tyres were taken to the edge ... superb tyres.

Rears are lasting about 3k on my 14, front should last about 3 rears.

whatever you do, get the supersports ones not touring.

love them on my gixer750, and since they cost the same for a pair as 1 rear is an added bonus

I love the Maxxis. I'm on my 3rd set of touring ones in my ZZR. They've never let go even when pushing it. Granted it's not an R1 but it does get thrown around a bit. Not amazing in the wet when cold but can't fault them otherwise.

For me good tyres give you more of a 'safety bubble', both for me taking the piss and to account for other people's stupidity.
Also, decent tyres to my values are ones that grip well from cold and in the wet.

My experience of the one Maxxis tyre I've used regularly was that it had terrbile grip from cold - doubly concering because it was a street compound supermoto intermediate.

Whats the point of having an R1 and then running the cheapest tyres you can get???

If you only lay the power down in straight lines and dont like the best performance (ie G's safety margins) then be a cheapskate on your tyres...

Personally give me a shit (in comparison to a R1) bike with good tyres rather thana great bike with okay tyres...

It all depends on your riding, I suppose - I got my GSXR as a flexible commuter - however that does mean putting myself in situations where I'm riding very close to other traffic for a lot of the time.
Further I do want some fun in my commute - so I will on occasion push my own and the bike's limits (sure, in a way a more skilled rider probably wouldn't be, despite doing whatever 'better') whereupon I want that 'safety net'.

Oh and consider getting your suspension looked at - it makes less of a difference to wear on the road, but does make some difference still.

I haven't used this tyre, but from my past experiences, I wouldn't personally buy one just out of prejudice if nothing else.

Of course even with the cheapest plastic Chinese tyres, if you ride smoothly and avoid too many harsh or overly strong accelerations (in all manners) you'll still be fine.

Now the tyre was clearly faulty and not all Supermax will be like that, but felt I should point it out that quality control at Maxxis might not be all it could be ...

thanks for all your replies, interesting comments. Have just got back from my local garage and had a chat with the mechanics. Going to give these a miss and try some Super Corsa 3's instead. I dont want to take any chances.

I've got Corsa IIIs on my GSXR and liking them, but remember these are almost track rubber so very sticky, but wear quickly too.
Mine were £200 fitted however, which isn't bad at all considering prices these days.

It's not that you'll die on dodgy tyres - more that you have to ride accordingly, I prefer not to have to .
