Seems that since the economy when to the wall they've not been ramming this shit down our throats anymore. Interesting - how come it is no longer the most important single issue in the world now? Are my children no longer doomed to a future of eeking out a meagre existance on a baking planet?

Surely something should still be done?

Oh I still hear it now and again, however the tone is more cautious and more analyitical. Something I heard on the radio recently (dunno which channel) was about how food miles was completely bogus a measure of a carbon footprint.

Probably also that Labour isn't in power anymore and it was a means to control people, though I am not saying the Con/Lib alliance is not seeking to control people either.

No, 'cos it never existed - and even scientists who support the theory concede that (if it exists) it's impossible to prevent, the money would be better spent on coping with the (alleged) inevitable changes.

That said, I still see plenty about it - The Met are always wibbling on about their climate change obligations.

I've got no issue with protecting the environment and fighting actual pollution, but the climate change agenda needs dumping ASAP. Hopefully we're seeing the start of that now.

Yup, "man made" are the key words here!
All the evidence i've seen, supports that it's a natural change.
We are in fact having very little affect on the planets climate. Wink
Yet another way for the powers that be to control the masses. Wink
Maybe they've realised we have cottoned on?

The problem is in proving it. The planets temperature changes second to second, minuter to minute all the way up to changes every hundred thousand years. E.g if an ice age occurs say every 150,000 years then you could plot the average temperature over the 150,000 year cycle giving a rough estimate of what the temperature should be now. But this value is only an average and will not correspond to any reading taken at a single instant, or even taken over years. To sample 1% of the time period between ice ages would still be innacurate and would require us to take readings for the next 1,500 years.

In short, we are having an effect on the planet and it's not for the better. Proving it is difficult, measuring it near impossible.

The planet has been completely toxic by our standards many many times and it has completely recovered every time and it will again. Will we be about to see that happen? Maybe.

Providing it is true, Britain contributes 2% to the world's CO2 emissions, don't worry about it.

America, China and Russia are the only ones who can make a significant difference, and you know what they're like.

Ignore it, live your life.

Bang on there!

If money is going to be spent, it is much more beneficial to prepare for and adapt to any climate changes that try to stop them.

Milankovitch cycles are involved to some extent, and I'd like to see the government try to tax volcanoes - they got us out of the 'snowball earth' situation.
We DO produce *some* CO2, but not a huge amount when compared to other sources. The closest I can come to agreeing with the climate change doom-mongers is that maybe we contribute *just enough* to tip the system over the edge?

Hmmm... Climate gets warmer (for whatever reason) -> turn up A.C. -> increase in electricity usage -> increase in fossil fuel use -> global warming increases (allegedly) (turn the A.C. up further!) -> polar bears (and kittens, obviously) die

That's what the AGW crowd claim - but it doesn't really stand up to scientific scrutiny, despite their best efforts to blag it.

Humans make up a small fraction of CO2 emissions, and the UK make up a tiny fraction of that.

Even if AGW is real and all down to man-made CO2 - China and India are never going to comply with targets because they are trying to drag up the standard of living for their massive populations, who will go postal if they don't get a dose of consumerism.

In the face of that, even if the UK stopped ALL CO2 emissions we're just be a drop of piss in the ocean of everyone else's.

=We're wrecking our economy for nothing.

Mainland Chinese take the biscuit sometimes, actually a lot...(HK is nuclear powered these days btw)

Travelling round china last year the mainland Chinese people have a tendancy to turn on air conditioners and open windows at the same time. 6 years ago I employed a mainland Chinese bloke. It was winter so he turned up the heat didn't even look just turned the thermostat to max and went back to bed. When it got too hot he did something even more mind boggling.

Instead of turning down the heat when it got too hot he turned on the air conditioner.

When the air conditioner lost the battle he opened the windows. Its funny in Beijing you see cars with air con turned on and people drive around with open windows.

Hi

Man made CO2 amounts to 3% of global CO2 emissions (although that figure is a bit dubious when you remember absorbtion and emissions from the sea, etc).

Problem is that both those who believe and those who do not believe in man made global warming being a problem have a habit of making badly based arguments. We land up with someone with zero knowledge of climate but who has used claimed climate change as a basis for a study on its effects on their area of expertise (ie, someone studying the possible effects of X degree increase on temperature on some animal) having their results being held up as being in support of man made climate change.

There is also the issue of how much human activity increases temperature. Basic science is simple, and an increase in CO2 levels will increase temperature. How much is another question (especially as CO2 acts as a greenhouse gas on a limited wavelength of energy emissions, and we are close to absorbing all of that anyway), and how much that is increased or mitigated by feedbacks (ie, higher temp means more clouds, which depending on the type can further increase or reduce temperature) is yet another question. Taking the simple theory if someone is asked if human CO2 emissions affect temperature then the answer is yes, but that is a very different question to asking them if the effect is noticeable or important. After all if the increase is 0.01 degrees then does anyone really care?

Other problem is measuring temperature changes. We only have about 30 years of accurate global temperature measurements. Anything prior to that are easily contaminated surface measurements, or proxy measurements.

It does all seem to have died down quite a bit. The liberals did campaign on it a bit in the last election but now seem to have forgotten about it.

One problem is that even if you do go along with it, how do you define CO2 emissions? If I buy a TV then so much was generated making it. But if it was made in the UK then that counts, yet if it was made in China then it is ignored. Stamping down on UK CO2 emissions from business really does little more than move those emissions somewhere else (and probably increase them when you take account of transport).

All the best

Keith

I think, perhaps, some of you guys missed my sarcasm.

Ironically, just this morning there was some renewed bleating about MMCC, saying we're not cutting emissions fast enough. I must be a uninentional barometer for IPCC publicity...

I read that the UK will be one of the least effected areas in the world from climate change, apart from losing a bit of Norfolk, but who cares Very Happy (Hopefully they can put snetterton on stilts or something).

Kind of Ironic seeing as we started the Industrial revolution Thumbs Up

So sit back, buy some more sunscreen and watch the rest of the world burn. Very Happy

I don't believe humans are the biggest contributor to global climate change, however I do like to believe the Gaia theory, I have got the book to read, and will be doing the in near future, but from what I saw, it seems pretty good. Global climate change is happening and has always and always will be happening.

Any models drawn up by scientists can't be valid because there are some many feedback systems that we don't know about or understand properly. I suspect the reason for the all the money being spent on low emissions stuff is because using the global warming 'card' is any easy reason to validate projects/ideas.

Making things more efficient is my eyes a great thing to do and should be encouraged. However spending so much money for such little gain in efficiency is well inefficient. I also wonder if the money spent on being 'green' could have been a contributor to the current economic situation.

Luke wrote:

All we started was a one way trend to automated mechanisation of production, being the pioneers it was a lot slower for us. The other countries are doing the same thing as we did, except they are leapfrogging a few steps and able to do it at a faster rate as we have done it once before.

Our reliance on oil is unsustainable with the current technology, you can't really argue with that. Oil is a finite resource and therefore can be used up.

I've got no problem with developing clean power, or renewable energy technologies, or with cutting actual pollution.

I just don't think we should be actively penalised and taxed for generating CO2 above spurious randomly-generated levels, when there's no proof it causes any harm, and even less than CO2 restraint will prevent anything anyway.

It's bollocks, it's just a topic used by some publicity starved "Experts" that need a 'hobby-horse' to put them into the public's eye (have you noticed that the vast percentage of these "Experts", whatever their chosen subjects may be, originate from the US ?, must be a country full of 'em). When this sad excuse of a government having off-loaded practically any power of any significance to the 'Black Hole' of Brussels start saying 'NO' to even more airport runways, 'NO' to expensive extravagances like the Olympic Games I'll not believe that there's either a 'Global Warming' problem or the our country's on it's financial knees. It's all bollocks !.

I have very little time for eco-freaky weird-beards. By all means we should seek to be more efficient and less polluting but not at the expense of lives.

There was some crap on BBC Wales a few months ago, some family who loved their gadgets had to go and live like barbarians in some alfalfa-farming hippie commune and live off the land in harmony with nature. Oh yes, cars and electricity and all that shit is awful.

Do these eco-warriors really expect us to believe if they broke their leg while tending their lentils they WOULDN'T call (telephone) an ambulance (internal combustion engine) to go to hospital (modern medicine)? They'd really let their leg get dealt with in filthy conditions, heal incorrectly and be wonky for the rest of their lives? Or indeed just die of any other easily curable disease but HEY! At least they didn't 'kill the planet' doing so!

Lives eh? What timeframe are we talking? Immediate lives or future effects that could affect millions?

Now don't get me wrong, I love to go an fill the air with blue smoke and kill penguins just as much as the next man. To deny that humanity is headed towards some difficult times is pretty ignorant.

Consider that pretty much all you see around you in western society, directly or indirectly, comes from the energy in oil/fossil fuels. It's well known that the fossil fuels are being used quicker than they can be replenished. Once the oil starts to get low there will be problems (sci-fi style "resource wars" anyone?) big enough in themselves.

The fact that the climate is changing is another nail in the coffin, but in my mind comes second to the futue scarcity of our main energy source.

Those eco-freaky weird-beards on their alfalfa farms are going to be much better suited to the future than the the average brain dead westerner who has their lives handed to them on their i*insert apple product here*...
