 |
|
I have a Toshiba Satellite S1410-303 Laptop which I bought back in 2002.
The problem I have is it can’t seem to keep up with the modern programs and keeps crashing or running slowly so I was wandering if it would be cheaper to buy a more up to date Processor and more Memory rather than buying a new computer?
Current facts and figures:
Toshiba Satellite S1410-303
Celeron ( R ) CPU 1.50GHz
1.50GHz, 348MB of RAM
18.6GB Capacity
10.9GB Used
7.64GB Free
Just bear in mind i'm a computer numpty so have no idea what i would need to do myself. ____________________ Past bike: 2004 Hyosung Comet

Another vote for more memory.
Visit Crucial Memory and run their scanner tool, it'll tell you how much you can put in your machine, and what type. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

Must admit more memory would be the cheaper option?
Your Computer Specifications
256 MB DDR PC2100 128 MB DDR PC2100
Maximum Memory Capacity: 524288 MB
Currently Installed Memory: 384 MB
Available Memory Slots: N.A.
Total Memory Slots: 2
Dual Channel Support: N.A.
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1.50GHz Model 2, Stepping 4
CPU Speed: 1495 MHz
I presume everything else should be OK once it has more memory?
Also if i upgrade the memory will it loose all the photo's and files i currently have on the laptop? ____________________ Past bike: 2004 Hyosung Comet

You might want to check what hard drive you've got in it too. My lappy used to have a 30gb 4200rpm drive with a slow access speed, it's now got a 120gb 7200rpm drive in it and is much happier. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. I don't think it's worth it in an 8 year old laptop.
So much other stuff in there is really dated like how it handles video.
Why not splash out on something like https://www.ebuyer.com/product/186604 - sorted for another 8 years. |

Checking the specs, the most memory you could go to is 512mb, which would be £28 from Crucial. The hard drive you have is a 4200rpm jobbie, a new 5400rpm 40gb drive would be about £25 (120gb around £40), so for less than £60 you would see an improvement - obviously not as much as buying a new £400 laptop, but that's the nature of compromise
I'm guessing it's probably been quite a few years since the O/S was reinstalled and the machine given some housekeeping too. Best find a local tame nerd to give you a hand, methinks. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

If you do pay someone to do the upgrades for you, make sure you get your old drive back, preferably in a caddy like this :-
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310227627628
It's only £3.40, and gives you access to all your old files should they have screwed something up.
Shame you're not local, I'd do it for you for the price of materials and a couple of bacon butties ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

It won't be cheap. The labour costs will probalbly cost more than the parts you're fitting. ____________________ the undemocratically unelected mod of the Scottish section |

True, once the total goes anywhere near £100 it'll be cheaper buying a secondhand lappy with a better spec. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

The memory's only £14.10 from Here (part KTT3614/256).
I'd try that as a cheap, first option as it doesn't involve loads of labour or mucking about with your operating system.

Just a limitation of the machine, you've got two slots that can only take 256mb each. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

You're usually better off buying a matched pair, but £14 for trying one 256mb stick of RAM wouldn't go amiss. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

Well just looked at the manual the Slot 1&2 i can see is for PC cards. But have now found where the RAM is.
Which one of the 256MB ran do i need to buy or are they the same?
And as for the 20GB Hard Drive i'll wait and see before i change it since can put anything important on memory sticks. ____________________ Past bike: 2004 Hyosung Comet

Just buy the 256Mb memory module above (Kingston Memory part no. KTT3614/256). Remove the 128Mb module from your laptop and replace it with the new one. The machine (and Windows) will automatically detect the change.
