Insurance if you only lived in UK 2 years?

Hi

I hope someone will be able to help me - I have saved up enough money to get me a new bike YaY \o/ - I am currently not sure if I want the new bmw s1000 rr or a new 2010 fireblade - which is just a positive problem - BUT, I've been trying to get Insurance quotes and turns out no one want's to insure the bikes for me - the reason being that I've only lived in UK for around 2½ years and hence have no insurance history here.

Surely I cannot be the only person who moved from another country (In this case denmark) to the UK and want an insurance for a new bike?

I'm 37 - had my full bike license for 14 years, never had an accident or any other form of disqualification etc.

Most of the insurance companies I have spoken to so far say that the my only choice is to buy a smaller used bike - but as you can imagine that is not exactly what I am looking for now that I saved up the money for a new one.

Does anyone know of any insurance companies that don't mind if you don't have an insurance history in the UK?

How many insurance companies have you phoned? No NCB shouldn't mean no one will insure you.

Try putting your details into some online quote places like confused.com to help get an idea of insurance prices.

Can you buy a bike in Denmark and insure it there, ride it here?

i never had any problems, getting insurance, have you got a uk licence??
i paid through the nose because i was on a nz licence,
but it still wasn't worth getting it,
i was almost above the law when it came to fines and points,
the British police can't put points on a foreign licence

If you've lived in the UK for 2.5 years and have been using a licence from Denmark, then you best exchange it for a UK one soon as you've only got a 3 year window.

I insured a car FC and a bike FC just after landing in Australia with no problems. They didn't want to see proof of my UK no claims.

You have no no claims bonus, and are trying to insure a brand new litre bike, without having ridden anything for over 2 years, not suprising that no-one fancies insuring you.

Have you looked at getting a 2nd hand sports 600 for a year to get some NCB. Will be a lot cheaper than the bikes you are looking at too.

Iv'e got a 2009 Fireblade, its a brilliant bike, but its a little boring, I'd try both out!

I moved to UK from Denmark 8 years ago and never had a problem with insurance on either cars or bikes and i've had a about 4 of each in the time i've been here.

I even did both licences here cos it's dirt cheap compared to denmark lol.

I think it's bike that's the problem aswell. maybe try getting some quotes on smaller bikes and see if they'll insure you on those.

Just been quoted £230 for the firestorm i'm picking up in 2 weeks yay! £500 cheaper than my old gixxer lol

Hi all

First of all thanks for all the reply's and suggestions :up: and YES! it all worked out - got my brand spanking new s1000rr today insured and all! YaY \o/ :D

in the end I got a quote from the bmw insurance company linked from the bmw motorrad homepage - I am certain they are more expensive than many other companies, but having tried so many other places I wasn't being picky.

One thing that I thought was kindof strange tho - I managed to get my old Danish insurance company send me documentation for having 10 years of no claim bonus, yet when I called one of the main companies they just said that still wouldnt count as:
1. the bikes I got the NCB on were not insured in UK
2. it was over 3 years ago

So to summarize and to be fair - I guess the insurance companies need you to have recent experience with a bike in the same class and in the same country to be willing to insure your bike - at least that is how it looks to me.
