Having used one of the above (the biggest/thickest one in the set) like a chisel (note: flathead screwdriver), to knock out my old wheel bearings, i've found that the head of the screwdriver has been damaged (it's now got a slanted edge as part of the end has chipped off). Not particularly happy as i was under the impression that it wouldn't be a problem and that it's a high quality tool so wouldn't break yada yada.

The possible good news is that i have a lifetime guarantee (if i can find my receipt), but i'm aware that the small print says something akin to "if you were using the tool for the correct purpose". I can see them trying to refuse the return because i was wasn't using it for turning. Is this an "incorrect" use that'll void the warranty? Any way of arguing the toss?

I've also realised though, that i've never seen/heard of a list of what the "correct usages" are for the tools (or examples of "warranty voiding" uses). Surely they have a list? Not that i can find though, so does anyone know where i can find it? (if they refuse a replacement i don't want this to happen again) Or do they just make it up to suit?

If you want to use a screwdriver in this fashion then get one that has metal running all the way through to the top and is designed to be hit with a hammer......
Not one with a plastic handle.

You might be lucky and get them to replace it, but if they say no, you might as well just go and buy another.

Pretty sure correct use for a screwdriver does not include use as a bearing extractor Laughing

You're surprised that you damaged a screwdriver by repeatedly smacking it with a hammer?

Go in there and ask for a replacement but don't be surprised if they say no. In future, get a suitable drift.

I would definitely say so - unless it's specifically listed that it can be used as a drift (as a few are), then there's no way that was intended in the design.

I used to work for Halfrauds, and my advice is do not be honest about it's misuse. Tell them you were monkeying on a dirty great bit screw with both hands and it went ping, and a bit of metal nearly had your eye out. If they notice any marks on the end you hold from where you've been whacking it, tell them you might have dropped it on the floor.

If you're nice enough about it, the part will get replaced, and they'll send it back as a warranty job to the manufacturer. It's only about a quid's worth of tool anyway, they'd be silly to kick up a fuss...

But.... If you'd have got me, on a bad day, I'd have eagle eyed the marks and been straight on your case asking if you were using it as a chisel. If you'd coughed to it, I'd have told you to jog on. If you'd kept cool and stuck to the script, you'd be ok or I guess you'd be wanting to talk to my area manager..... Wink

A list??? Are you fucking kidding me? The clue is in the name: "Screwdriver". If you need a list, I suggest you give up using any tools...

So you just ignored the overwelming advice in the Drift thread you started... Rolling Eyes You even linked to a cheap set....
Perhaps you should be looking at the 2 posters who said to use a flat bladed screwdriver to replace you abuse of said tool Embarassed

Just wrap some duck tape round the end and the screwdriver will be OK Laughing

You have to wonder why people even bother to give advice Karma

If you wanted to use a screwdriver as a drift, then why use an expensive one. A big one from the pound shop would have worked OK for the same thing. It gets knackered? It was only a quid.

It's the BCF way, just ignore everything you have been advised and bodge it.

Halfords staff aren't really known for their intelligence/loyalty, I've heard many comedy stories of things being returned for a replacement when they've obviously been completely mashed.

I'd say you'll probably get it replaced with no issues.
