I intended to do this backwards actually ie ship the bike to South Africa and ride back up, but didn't manage to do it, hence since I'm annoyed due to the loss of the XT and generally want to keep myself busy have decided to plan another one.

https://bikechatforums.com/files/route_plan_1.jpg
Wingmen wanted:
Bikes will be XT varient ie Xt550 or Xt500 to reduce carnet cost and balance of power vs compression vs reliability which is essential ,kicker and maintenance kept low, triple oil coolers will be added , 43 litres of fuel to be carried.XTs have been proven 100s of times round the world KTMs, TEs, EXEs DRZs BMW x-challenges have been tested but not extensively.
One spare set of trellebourg tyres will be carried which should last till South Africa.
Soft side luggage , one top box each,
Will travel unarmed
Will carry a SPOD beacon, satellite phone and GPS.
Trip might potentially be sponsored lightly but not fully this demands that much filming and reriding certain sections be done.
The Congo will most definately be avoided either by boating it round or going on the opposite coast. Sudan darfor region has issues of no fuel or food , though Kinshasa and Brazzaville have even more problems.
Time of departure January 2012.
boot note:
I am not the easiest person in the world to get on with and I attract trouble like flies to cow sh*t.

How long do you anticipate the trip lasting for? I may well be up for this but have to balance it against practicalities ____________________ Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. |

Mate, the route is a bit dangerous. You know, the last Dakar championship had been cancelled due to the acts of local bandit groups.
I think that a biker should have enormous big balls to follow that path.
That's good to think of another territory for exploration. ____________________ A rider from Istanbul, TR.

You could still ship the bikes down, the company I work for ships to Port Elzabeth and Durban from Southampton.
They are all car carriers so bikes get shipped quite alot too.

To both Itchy and G: If you make it down to Cape Town I'll buy you a beer.
Actually I might be keen to do part of Southern Africa as well. Maybe a loop around Zim, through Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana/Namibia.
But in typical South African fashion I have not idea what I'll be up to next month, never mind 2 years from now |

Are there any takers for this trip? My plan right now if certain things fall into place over the next couple of months is to depart March 1st 2011.
Might even do it on the CBR, also because BCF now has a contact within WW shipping doing it backwards may make more sense than doing it the normal way.
Small cc cheap bikes because carnets are required for Sudan and South Africa. DR350s and XT350s are prime candidates.
Rough fag packet calc is £3K+bike+£250 in carnet fees + flight home and shipping fees. Chives? You game for doing this next year? ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. Yup I have a DR350 in mind for this. |
They are pretty much the best light weight reliable dual-sport bike you can use for africa. lots of aftermarket bits like large tanks, good MPG, bullet proof engine if looked after, good supenion.
The XT350 is a good bike but is let down by shimed vavles compaired to screw-lockunt on the DR and has a weak subframe and supenion. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |
