PostPosted: 04:51 - 14 Aug 2010    Post subject: project 67 Vespa (1)50s (update 4/10/2012) Reply with quote

a week ago i picked up this motley vespa 50s small frame
its been fitted with a 150cc large frame engine,
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/111022874_full.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/111022850_full.jpg
as you can see, its had a pretty rough life and has been cut down,
a bit of a fad in the late 80's,
so thats the bad, the good is the engine has had extensive work done, porting, the the crank intake has been modified, and she runs pretty damn well breathing through the 200cc carb,
its also been fitted with a custom expansion chamber, and 10" wheels to give her a bit of clearance,

any way, the wee vespa will never be an original scoot again, so there is no point even trying to make it so,
but i will give her a complete strip down and try and give it a bit of normalcy again,

strip down, take 1
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2968Medium.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2969Medium.jpg
some one has cut of the side panel, so the engine is always exposed now
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2970Medium.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2971Medium.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2972Medium.jpg
engine out (less than 30mins)
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2973Medium.jpg
what they had to do to fit the larger engine in.
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2974Medium.jpg
its to push the shock back wards so it doesnt hit the engine, ill come up with a better method
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2975Medium.jpg
and front end off
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2977Medium.jpg
all the cables out
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2978Medium.jpg
and done!!
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2979Medium.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2980Medium.jpg

so thats stage 1,
on the next episode... foot well and leg shields...

i quite like the older ones,
im not really a fan of the square px series

never owned a vespa before, but im quite impressed with the simplicity of them

Cool project Thumbs Up I'm thinking of doing up a PK small frame Vespa as a future project, just for something to nip into town on in summer and to go for a little tat down the back lanes on.

Can never have enough 2stroke's! Laughing

well progress pics,
i have cut a new floor and welded it in place
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3010Small.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3007Small.jpg
i also re-inforced the floor
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2997Small.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3001Small.jpg
its mostlty just spoted in place
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3000Small.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3005Small.jpg
on both sides,
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3009Small.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3008Small.jpg
except for the very front where its welded right the way down the seam
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3003Small.jpg

i also rebuilt the front end, and milled part of the fork to shift the wheel center again,
f knows why but the wheel ran about 15mm off center, it might be the off set of the rims, although they are specific 10" rims to fit the 150 super forks,
any way, some of the strip down pics
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2985Small.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2984Small.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2983Small.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF2982Small.jpg

any ways thats it for now, i have a bit more grinding to do to the welds, and then ill bog with fibre filler, then regular filler,
then start on the paint prep,
i have all new cables, pads, bearings, etc etc, which will be fitted as i go, lucky i stripped the front end, as the needle bearings were missing needles?? and that off center problem which was causing a weave is now sorted,

ill keep ya posted,
im waiting on a few more bits to arrive, but hopefully the build will pick up pace a bit now.... stupid work permitting,

right ive finished work and had a few days off, so hopefully the pace will quicken,
ok as we stand at the moment,
i have got the primer down, and i think i have picked up most of the little chips and nicks etc, so should be good to lay down the first layer of colour tonight

heres the pics
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3041Small.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3039Small.jpg
as you can see the under side of the vespa is black,
ive used a hard wearing but flexible chassis paint that hopfully will do the job of protecting the exposed areas from chips etc, it dents but doesnt chip or flake

the rest is just filled and primed
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3037Small.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3038Small.jpg

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/vespa/DSCF3042Small.jpg

hopefully later on ill get some more pics up of the first layer of colour
