I bought a 64gb USB stick in china a while ago. When I say 64gb I actually 16gb. It reads on the computer as 64gb though. I know they reprogramme them to read higher numbers to cheat you out of money. Luckily it was still cheap even for 16gb. Can I get it back to reading what it's supposed to? Formatting doesn't work.

Your gunna have issues with this.
I will be suprised if it works for more than week or after so many read writes.

1)there must be something written on the tip of the pen drive(some codes of the pen drive manufacturer)....2)see the data transfer speed ..if the speed is greater than 10 Mb then correct and if less than 2 Mb then the fake one................
and these pen drives also don't stores information if the data is in folders.

Do the following steps:-
1. Right click on my computer icon and open manage.
2. Then open disk management.
3. There u see ur pen drive.
4. Right click on ur pen drive and click on format.
5. After successful formating restart ur computer.
6. Ur pen drive wil work again.

comand prompt way of formating pendrives is really working great.
from the start menu run the cmd. then type h: (if ur pendrive is in 'h' drive)
then type [format h:].

goto Start>run>cmd press enter
and type format then your drive at last (Smile
example
format j: ("j" is the drive)

and if u want to quick format it
than type
format j:/q

H: {letter of your pendrive} Press Enter
Format H: press Enter
Again Press Enter
y press Enter
Press Enter
Exit Press Enter

Open the DOS prompt (Start >> Run >> cmd)
Type:
FORMAT X: /FS:FAT32 /Q /V:PenDrive
This will also reformat the Pen drive, using the FAT32 file system, and label the drive PenDrive. Replace X: with the actual drive letter of your Pen Drive

You don't have to restart your PC after formatting an external harddrive/usb drive. You only do that if you format a brand new disk and setting up partitions. Or if you're re-formatting your primary partition to install winblows etc.

Also why would you use FAT32 these days?
Unless you're running windows 98 or something i don't see any reason for FAT32. Unless the drive doesn't support NTFS.

I suspect he will need to do a proper format if anything so quick format is pretty useless as it doesn't really format the drive but rather overwrites existing data with nothing.

Also if it really is 64gb then using FAT32 would not be a good idea. There are size limits to FAT32. Think it's 32gb or something.

Edit: Have you tried something like partition magic on the drive to see what it looks like there?
Maybe re-do the partition and see if that helps. Will need a format after you've done that.

Old South bridge peripheral, I would'nt format to NTFS if i was you, it's guna be a fake 2 mg transfer rate anyway.
Sorry pal. I have seen loads of them.

Disadvantages: of NTFS

There are, however, few drawbacks when using NFTS on a USB drive. First and foremost, it requires more writing to the USB drive. Thus slower access to the device but not to the extend that turns off people from using it.

As far as the encryption is concerned you will not be able to access them from other computers. This could be a perfect feature, depending to what extend you want to secure the USB drive. If you think this will cause trouble when you need to do use it in multiple stations then don't do the files encryption.

How to enable USB drive with NTFS?

1. You need to connect your USB device to your computer, that's for sure. Right-click on My Computer from the desktop and choose Manage.

2. Click on "Device Manager" and expand out "Disk Drives". There are maybe couple of drives depending on how many USB drive & hard drive connected to your PC.

3. Right click on USB drive and select "properties". After that, click on the "Policies" tab and choose "Optimize for performance" radio button. Finally click OK and you are done!

If you right-click on USB drive and select "Format.." you will see NTFS is now available.

I tested it by trying to download 64gb of data but it topped out at 16gb. I've just plugged it into another computer and it says it's not formatted. I'll try some of the guides later but if it don't work I'll see what the inside looks like with a hammer

That was a wasted post did you even read the last line?

Also you are wrong about NTFS the majority of things since 2000 can read NTFS any PC with an OS newer than Windows NT can read it.

If I where you I would try learning things not just copy and pasting answers.

People use NTFS for a reason.

Fat can only have a 4gb file size as a maximum, it is less stable and slower at read big files. It has a slight advantage at reading smaller files but not enough to be any concern. It is also crap at reading fragmented data whereas NTFS can take it in it's stride. AFAIK there is No/Minimal difference in write speed.

I bought a 200GB Sony USB stick for about £2 from the Pearl Market in Beijing. It was obviously a fake as everything sold there is.

Managed to write one file to it, then couldn't read or write on it anymore after that.

Also purchased the worst quality copy of Watchmen on BluRay I have ever seen. It was like VHS quality but with vaseline smeared over the screen. If memory serves, it wasn't even a BluRay disc it was a VCD.

Just a few tips on formatting and resizing sugestions actually in reference to the original question, but if you read a little further you would have noticed it was fake, so none of this actually matters.

Looking back I don't see where top contributed to the thread.

I wonder if he knows what ZFS file systems means without googleing it.?

Have to agree, Esoteric1, your posts do seem to be generally wrong. NTFS would not be a problem, virtually any computer running these days will read an NTFS drive, can't see him hooking up a 16gb flash drive to a Windows 95 machine, NTFS is also for the majority faster than FAT, not slower. The only issue with using NTFS on a flash drive is if you plan to use it in other hardware like music players, DVD players with USB in etc as they will often only read FAT16/32.

Your method of formating is little more than deleting too, and there's no reason to use a command prompt format, it's just a long way to do a windows one. It certainly won't resize the drive. Proper low level format software is needed for a genuine format and even some of the best programs still can't resize hacked flash drives.

Lastly, hacked flash drives do transfer at more than 2mb/s, where you came up with that arbitrary figure is anyone's guess. The memory isn't of inferior quality, it's just smaller than than it appears usually, I've had a few fake memory items, all transfer at normal speeds. They also hold directory structures so again, not sure what you mean they won't let you create folders.

I know it is fake Steve told me in the pub after he came back from hong kong, you can still write to it it just fools windows into making it believe it is bigger than it is. Try reading the post again he is asking for a tool that resets the file size not how to format the drive ATM whether it is FAT or NTFS is not the issue. He already said formatting doesn;t work I.e. he has tried it and knows how to do it.
I might was well have posted a copy and paste from google on how to install a CD drive from google for all the good it did.

Try only answering questions when you know the answer not copy and pasting from google. Nothing is wrong with google you not understanding questions and posting copy and paste shite is the issue.

Yeah you right about the FAT32 and NTFS issue, Vista actually has a facility to format USB pen drives to NTFS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fv1cwY3iYE.

I posted a link to resizing software and a set of other instruction of how this could be achieved, I also posted how formating could be done using command prompt.

Just posting a few suggestions, no need for a penis measuring competition.

Anyway the threads dead, it died long ago when it was ascertained that the said pen drive was fake.

Finished munching on those salt and vinigar crips yet keyboard warrior.

As I said before not a keyboard warrior happy to meet anyone face to face that has a problem with me.

The drive still works this seems to be what you cannot grasp. Yes it is a fake but it works as a drive just a 16 not a 64 if he could find software that work change the size that windows recognises it as it would be a fully functioning 16gb pen drive.

Did you actually look at the link you posted? Probably not, point to where to software that resizes pen drives is on that page, it's a loads of unrelated keyword linked software.

This is what I'm getting at spamming barely relevant links and copy and pastes is pointless.

What difference does formatting from the command prompt do to formatting in Windows? Again more pointless irrelevant information.

Seriously what have you contributed to this thread?

Telling him how to format which he has said he already has.

Posted a link claiming to be for changing the size of a pen drive but was full of over junk software.

Saying load of junk about FAT vs NTFS which was not only unrelated but wrong

What have you contributed that has been relevant or helpful in this thread?

Read the original question and reform it into some logical coherent syntax we can all understand.

You joined this thread to slag off other people, measure penis sizes as the analogy goes, and made no offer to answer this illogical question your self in the first place.

You been shot down and already, your a keyboard warrior sat there slagging others off. This thread died long ago so pee off please.

I quote "Formatting doesn't work"

So I posted some suggestions, get off the case dood.
Answer questions in stead of slagging people off.

I already admitted i was wrong about the FAST32 and NTFS transfer rates and now stand corrected.

This thread hasn't died the problem is still there.

I hunt people who post BS and unhelpful comments such as your self.

I have no idea why you keep going on about being a keyboard warrior or penis sizes, I'm purely pointing out you have been posting irrelevant crap. The reason this forum is good is because most people do try to help and post useful comments not just spam copy and pasted shite.

Also

Your = possesive

You're = You are
