I've been riding about on my new yamaha ybr 125 with normal leather type shoes without any problems, not great for ankle protection mind. So I bought some boots from j & s on ebay. Look fine and fit fine. They are only about 30 quid. Just been out for a ride and found I can't operate the gears. Impossible to move from 1st to 2nd they just won't fit under the gear lever! Nightmare.
Do you reckon it's a problem with the boots or am I just being a stupid tw@t??? Shocked

You could adjust the gear lever Thumbs Up

Undo the bolt, slide it off and put the lever back on but increase the gap so you can get boot under the lever Thumbs Up

Unless there's something specific about tyour bike, or you're wearing teddy boy shoes, I can't think what the problem is??

I had that exact problem on my CBT. I bought some racey boots for use when I passed and couldn't fit my foot under the lever of a new version YBR125. They got me out a VAN VAN 125 which had a longer gear lever.

My suggestion is to get them softened up by wearing them around the house, they will stretch and will be ok after a while.

this

new 'proper' bike boots will be stiff (like any new boots tbh) and require a bit of time to wear in.

when i first got my vertigos i had to lift my leg just to change gear as i couldnt move my ankle! now they've worn in they're fine

You should be able to adjust the gear linkage rod to make the lever come up a bit.
I had exactly the same problem moving from my old boots to my new RST's.
Took a while to get use to but after moving the gsxr's lever a bit, it was okay.

Your gear lever will slide onto a splined shaft, either directly or through a linkage (likely directly on the YBR). The lever will be clamped on with a bolt. It's literally a 5 minute job to undo the bolt, slide the lever off the shaft, rotate it slightly to raise it and re-fit.

Not wanting to echo what everyone else has said, although i probably will, I did do the moving the gear lever with a ybr 125, it took a couple of minutes to get it right, slide it onto the splined shaft, sit on the bike see if it fits, off again, minor adjustment etc...

Word of warning though I found it best when I put mine so the top of my foot was touching the bottom of the lever, and not too high or you'll hit yourself in the chin when you go to change down again. It'll take a bit of getting used too, too, but well worth it when you get it right.

I can't remember if the if the right size tool was in the OEM toolkit either I think I had to buy another, it was too difficult to use under the bike and I almost stripped the bolt...

Either way with the right tools its an easy job, and takes 5 minutes.

A little easier if you get some help as you can sit on the bike and get someone else to put it in the right position.

It is damn near impossible to ride an older model YBR in boots.
Fact.

Which is why we all wear TCX shoes in our shop.

When I first wore motocross boots (I presume these are normal boots you've got, not dirt bike boots?) I always had this problem and kept thinking I needed to move the gear lever up.
However, doing so would mean it would be too high for going down, as it was already about right or a little too high for that.

I didn't notice when, but at some point I just wasn't have the problem, without anything changing.
Been using them for a few years now and while I don't like them on road bikes, managed to ride a GSXR1000 fine with them, despite a relatively 'extreme' riding position.

I always used to go into neutral on slow corners Laughing

But yeah, leave it where it is and wear your boots in cos else you'll end up in neutral all of the time.

Or just move the lever up for a couple hundred miles, wear your boots in then put it down 'gen Smile

Hi
Yes undo the nut and remove the bolt completly as it sits in a groove behind the splines on the shaft, it will then slide straght off easily.

On small bikes i always find the gear change linkage position annoying. It's either so far up that i need to take my foot completely off the peg to change down, or i struggle to get my toe under it. Big bikes seem designed more for man sized feet and don't seem to give me this problem. One solution i've found is to move my toe to the side, down, then up, kinda flicking the side of the lever rather than trying to get my whole toe under it.
