Posted: 21:50 - 28 Nov 2010 Post subject: What damage can a top end bearing do? |
 |
|
Okay so I have rebuilt my bike (details here)
Basically there is a ticking noise at very low revs on my bicycle. As soon as I rev it, it goes.
While rebuilding the bike, we didn't do the top end bearing. As far as my dad could tell, the bearing was fine.
Still not 100% it is that. Could just be the exhaust being a bit tinny while ticking over but yeah.
So:
a) what else could it be?
b) what damage would it do if it has gone?
Thanks guys ____________________ Rusty '02 Vito Camper + CBR600F3 |

derbi senda? yeah right.
hard to tell. could be a lot of things. can you get a recording?
future reference as a matter of course, if you're replacing the piston you may as well replace the bearing to avoid things like this for the sake of about £3. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. sounds like it could be idling a little too low? its possible...
2 strokes arent the quietest engines anyway.
tappets are on 4 stroke engines. hence why that guy is a div. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. yeah, it should be idling at about 1500-2000rpm. not close to dying. try and find videos on youtube and make it sound like that ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Its a 50cc two-stroke. Little end bearing, if it let go, could seriousely mash the engine.
Without the rollers in teh con-rod little end, conrod stands to get bent or broke, hardened rollers are likely to get into the ports, get dragged between piston and bore; snag in the bottom end bearings.....
Ie: can make a pretty nice mess of the whole shibang......
Worst case..... might do no more than make some nasty noises, and leave some debris in the crank-case..... you never know.
BUT, I suspect the noise is knocking.
You made comment about how its been semi-de-restricted, and you haven't messed with the carb.
Tune a bike, to makle more power, its going to need more petrol in the charge to make the extra power.
Tuning it, so it can drag more air in, without re-jectting will normally result in more air, same petrol hence a weak mixture, and that leads to funny knocking noises, known as 'knock'; or pre-ignition.
If your getting that at idel..... dont ride the damn thing! Put it under load and its likely to go incredibly weak and start melting pistons.
I think its back to your original connundrum of getting the jetting right for the mods you've made......
But I haven't heard it so could be barking up the wrong tree. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

however... if a bike is set to idle as close to dying as he says it is, then it'll knock a fair bit as the engine runs unevenly and not carrying momentum. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. 5. pockmark the head
A rattle on idle that clears with revs does sound like little end.
How did your dad inspect to deem the little end OK? |
Uh oh. And err, not too sure really. Speak to him tonight and ask him.
And as promised; the videos:
Warming Up - here
After a little bit of a run - here
And on a little run to see if this helps at all? - here
This is the noise so you lot can have a better guess.
If possible Matt, can I drive round yours on Friday to let you have a quick look?

from the video i'd say it sounds pretty sweet. can you pick out the sound you're hearing from the video?
after reading your older thread, i'd say you're being a bit hopeful about the bike.
it's only a 50cc. 20mph up a hill sounds about right. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. the less you run it, the more likely you are to be able to get away with re-using the base gasket if you do need to do the small end. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. if its the small end, it'll cost you a base gasket and a bearing. possibly a gudgeon pin.
why waste £15 on a full set when you dont need to?
impossible to tell for definate from a video. sounds about right with the tapping from the top end in my experience though ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles.
