as far as mechanics go, i'm thoroughly useless.

recently, due to the weather being on a bastardly-cold level and my garage having the insulating skills of an injured pidgeon , my clutch has started to stick fully outwards. I can manage to squeeze it in with a bit of force, but then it doesn't spring back out.

i think it's probably to do with it being cold and the lubrication freezing, could be wrong though.

just want to know if it is what i suspect and how to overcome it, are there any blankets or anti-freeze stuff that i could buy to stop it happening?

It could just be the cable freezing or damaged ? Confused

If it is iced up, perhaps take a hair dryer to the cable? Should help loosen it up a bit i would have thought Wink

Dont suppose you've ever lubed the cable? Could be an idea, i've never done it myself but if you use the clutch when its 'solid' like it is now, it WILL snap eventually. I should know, i had this on my 125. Its not particulary fun riding in the middle of town with no clutch i tell ye! Laughing

i'm not sure if it's the cable or the actual mechanism, i'll pull it in, but then it will stay in and the clutch lever will be dead loose and floppy and the clutch stays behind biting point.

Sounds like the cable seized up.

easy enough to just disconnect it at both ends, then get some oil worked into it to free it.

When I were a nipper my dad had a paraffin "sump heater", similar to this:-

https://www.tfmsuperstore.co.uk/product.lasso?product=Anti-Frost-Sump-Heater.-Parasene.+11537

You filled it up, lit it and let it burn under your car overnight in cold weather. Surpised there weren't more garage fires to be honest. Laughing

Apparently they did the the trick! You could leave one burning in your garage, not neccessarily under your bike, it would keep the frost out!

just checked it, it's thawed out now.

just need to find a method to keep it warm, will probably find some old blankets or something and whack them over the bike.

was thinking of a cover, but i don't see how a sheet of thin plastic will keep the cold out.

Could still be worth getting some lubrication into the cable.

It's freezing up because it has water in it......get some oil in there to prevent it.

Blimey, didn't know they still did them, I had one under my Vauxhall Victor the last time it was this cold (about 1978)
As you say, surprised it didn't set the car alight.
