Range limitations of Scart connections

Scart carries RGB, still widely used.

I work as an AV Pro (well ... ok... so-called-pro) and RGB Scart would be a blessed upgrade for most of our installs. The majority of our non-PC video is all Composite, except for those where I've managed to sneak in some S-Video cabling.

The slight, hard to see (with video, rather than graphics) improvement is offset by the extra complexity and cable bulk/cost, and the reduced robustness. Composite travels quite well. RGB doesn't. RGB-VGA even worse. Ghosting and smearing can get quite epic over 10+ metres unless you have very good cables. Beyond 15, maybe 25 I'd generally look at getting Cat5 repeaters instead. The longest we have on stock cable I think is somewhere south of 20 metres in a lecture theatre, with seperately shielded BNC leads for each of RGBHV, and it's still not exactly pin-sharp.

Still, you may be talking about Composite Scart?

As for the number of plugs connected "in line" - do you mean how many outputs branch from the one input or something? I think it'll probably start to degrade badly after the second, maybe third at best. It's meant as a point-to-point connection. Much like VGA, you split it passively (IE without a booster / repeater / active splitter) and the voltage will drop significantly, the image may dim or even just cut.

Don't be a scrub and get a proper powered splitter. The answer then pretty much becomes "how much can you spend?"

Oh, and don't get me started on trying to kill the goddamn VCR. Tutors fuckin' HOARD VHSes for some reason, even though we've had a transfer service running for quite some time. Still, they've proven to be a bit more robust than some of our DVD players, and cetainly the tapes last better than the discs in the hands of the usual hamfisted (ab)user. And unless I have to actually go for quality and have the time/opportunity to repeatedly cue it up until everything works, it's a lot more reliable and easy to use for recording with... and a shortplay tape looks better than a longplay disc.

(PVR or iplayer/etc download FTW, above all those, however ... the former for interlaced or commercial stuff, and the latter for progressive-scan BBC material)
