Don't bother unless it's supper cheap (which I doubt)

R6 is usually the highest 600 on insurance so have a look at J/G model ZX6's or even a Daytona 600/650 as they are usually cheaper to insure

One of the main selling points for me on the TT600 was the difference in insurance compared even to a CBR600F. Sports 6s for young riders are all pricey to insure, but the TT for insurance companies is a tourer and could net you a 50% discount compared to an R6 of the same year.
Plus, it's only balls out sports riders who think they're ugly. Bitches love the look. Laughing

I was looking at Ninja250s for a first bike when I was clueless about bikes. Relatively sure the triumph was cheaper even than them to insure, granted it had literally JUST came out and would've been brand spanking.

wow thats quite a quote! The R6 is usually quite high to insure.. i thought about one a while back but bought a CBR F model instead as it seemed alot cheaper to insure. Why not look at a 97-00 R6 if thats whats your after. Might save a bit and the lower value will hopefully mean lower insurance.

COM-PUH-TING

You want low insurance, something with a sporty look, and don't mind a twin?

GPz 500 or an SV650S - add £200 worth of aftermarket lower fairings if you want something to break when you drop it.

CB500 will be cheaper, faster and better. SV650 will be cheaper, faster and a bit sportier looking but made out of garden gates and recycled frying pans. Something like a bandit, hornet or fazer normally produces good insurance quotes.

There isn't really a good reason to own a 250 4t 'sports' bike in the UK.

P.S. The much older ninjas (mid 90s) had an R in the title, don't think the new ones do.

Agreed, I think the CBR250R is going to sell like hot cakes - at the Cake Haters Guild (Hot Things Avoidance Branch) Annual No Hot Cakes Allowed Gala. I really can't understand why they'd even introduce it.

For restricted licenses mebe? The only options I've seen near to the power limit are the kwaka ninja 250, and the cbr250.

Unless there are any other possibilities?

If so, I'd like to know; I'm about to go full (non-restricted) license due to the lack of decent 33kw bikes (and every biker I know telling me to not be a pussy).
Good analogy BTW Smile

I read somewhere that new laws on licencing restrictions is on the cards. These 250's and (I think) 68hp bikes are going to fit the requirements.I couldn't care to remember the laws as most of it is guff and never gets implemented.

But I agree, low powered 250 4t singles, in heavy commuter chassis with budget suspension are not sports bikes and should not be advertised as ninjas or cbr's. It just tricks kids/the uninformed into spending vast amounts of money on a plastic coated commuter.

Bring back the 250's of yesteryear. Ahhh 19k redlines... Crying or Very sad

I found that the 250 was the same price to insure as my Fazer.

Look at naked 6's. Bandit, Hornet, Fazer, Sv650 etc to see what they are like.

To be honest, your better getting one of those for the 2 years, or however long you have left and selling it for an R6 when the restrictions up. Won't lose as much money as the 250's depreciate very quickly, and also if your not in a financial position to change the bike after 2 years, at least you have a new bike when the restrictor kit is out.

I've never seen the appeal of the 250's. I would have one tomorrow if they were sensibly priced, but the cheapest I found was £3k? I couldn't justify it to be honest.

A restricted 600 will match the performance anyway.

No point in going for something 'flashy', or sport bike orientated at 17-19. They don't restrict well, and cost a fortune on insurance. Best thing is go with something 'boring' to get you a couple of years no claims and get rid of the restriction and then treat yourself to something special.

I get a lot of comments about my Fazer at college. It's more the fact its one of the only 'big bikes' that everyon is interested in so it's still cool Wink

There's 3 'ninja' 250s.

The ZZR250

https://www.asiaparts.jp/Images/zzr250.jpg

The GPX250

https://members.fortunecity.com/roadrash2/1024/kawasaki-gpx250r.jpg

And then the EX250, AKA the Ninja 250R

https://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/whers84/IMG_0229.jpg

Obviously the ZZR250 and the GPX 250 are harder to find, but the ones on ebay are both under £600, and they have pretty much the same engine as the new one. what one you like just depends on how much of a tart you are Wink

Also, it's obvious that the ZZR and GPX will both be lower to insure Thumbs Up

Nope, it's going the other way. In 2013, the license categories will be:

A1: Sit on a 11kW 125, ride 11kW 125s.
A2: sit on a 400cc 25kW+, ride any size, <=35kW (but not restricted from a 70kW+ bike)
A: sit on a 600cc+ 40kW+, ride any size, any power

A 250 isn't useful for any of those categories. You can't ride it with on A1, you can't sit an A2 test on it. You can ride it with an A2 license, but you'll have passed your test on a 500 or 650, so are you really going to go back down to a 250? I don't see it.

Have to agree, seeing it like that.

But it all depends on what age you can sit each test at. is it still 17 for the A1 and A2, and 21 for the A?

The ZZR doesn't come under "ninja" apart from in America, although kawasaki seem to put that marketing name on just about everything over there.

It might be the same story for the GPX but I'm not familiar with it over here.

I would definately recommend an older bike over the "ninja" 250 anyway though.

If that's the case, no one will buy the CBR250r since it's a single cylinder and only puts out just under 25bhp.

What's the point in that?

That's why i put the 'ninja' in quotes Thumbs Up Every kwaker over in the US is labeled Ninja, whereas the actuall ninja over here is known as the ZZR600 over there... it's certainly confusing!

17 for new A1.
19 for new A2
24(!) for new A, or 2 years after you pass new A2.

The 24 is imposed by Brussels. 17 and 19 are UK choices. They're not 100% confirmed yet, we're still waiting for the (overdue) publication of the actual legislation.

If it was sensible same rules should have applied for cagers.

Sit on a 1.2 micra, drive any 1.2.
Sit on a traction control turned off murcielago, drive any size.

I'd like to do my DAS is a couple of months in the warm weather and I may even consider a lowly 250 as my first bike, simply for the cost. My car can do 60MPG why would I want a bike that does less? Their arent many options out their for cheap and cheerful commuters that can safely sit at motorway speeds- and look good. I quite like the old Honda cb250 superdreams, shame their isnt a modern equivelant for people who dont like all that plastic.

That isn't really what the proposed rules are though is it?

A yamaha diversion or the stereotypical das bikes aren't exactly a performance equivilent to a murcielago are they?
