PostPosted: 18:22 - 12 Apr 2011    Post subject: 50cc Help Reply with quote

Hey im 15 and will be starting an apprenticeship in july. i am therefor going to need transport and have decided to go for a 50cc bike as i love bikes.

However my parents themselves know nothing about bikes so tis is where you people come in. I want to stay well clear of them crappy peds :L and would like a machine that looks close to a proper bike.

My Requirements are as followed;
Arrow Cheap to insure
Arrow Cheapish to buy (if possible)
Arrow Reliable
Arrow and nice looking

the style of bike i would like are either a bike like a derbi senda(supermotard/enduro style), or gilera dna (road bike looking style) also my final problem is im rather small about 5ft6" at a push :L

MANY THANKS
Patrick Roddy

Well, take a look at Autotrader, I don't know much about 50cc bikes.

How about this one, if your a little on the small side?

Do yourself a favour and keep away from any nasty chinese tat otherwise you'll be spending more time fixing your bike than going to college.

What kind of budget do you have, there are loads of 50cc race reps out there but none of them tend to be cheap to insure, or cheap to run due to the need for synthetic 2 stroke oils. Another problem with that type of bike is that the type of owner that has them tends to know nothing about maintainance and abuses them.

Take your pick from
Aprilia RS50
Yamaha TZR 50
Derbi GPR50
Rieju RS2 50 ect ect

Super Moto / Trailies
Derbi Senda 50
Yamaha DT 50
Suzuki TS 50
Aprilia RX50 ect ect

Personally I would just get a cheap twist and go 50 to get you back and fore to college. It will do the job with less maintainance and will be more reliable than the above. Use the money you've saved to buy a decent 125 or do your test when your 17. Whichever 50 you choose you can't go above 31 Mph legally so you may as well do it on the cheapest one possible.

Edit......I do realise the need to impress lovely large breasted college beauties though Twisted Evil

Haha previous comments about college :L nd yer I've looked at sendas and gpr's but they're costy :L ha nd I don't like peds nd my budget is what ever I can convince my dad to purchase :L I'd like a senda style bike that isn't so tempermental as they are as I've heard they can break a tad :L

i had a 57 senda, had a few problems to start with such as melting the spark plug after a month, but from then on it was a nice good bike, oh and the aprilia rx50 and derbi senda 50 and gpr50/newer ts50 all use the newer derbi engine which can be quite quick derestricted and jetted propperly, i had a reliable 55 out of mine

I'd get a derbi senda, or peugeot xps.
Maybe a TS50 if one came up, or an aprilia rx50.

when I was 16 I made that same choice. Gilera DNA or Derbi Senda. Thank F**K I didnt go for the Gilera DNA. Awful looking/sounding scooters in my opinion.

I never found the Derbi brilliant in the rain and found the build quality poor but they are very nice looking mopeds. Also be aware the Gilera RCR is exactly the same bike as the Senda but rebranded. Parts arent to hard to get hold of, I found these guys very usefull https://www.bike-spares.co.uk/.

First, any bike that you can (legally) ride will be a "ped". What you will have after you get your provisional and complete a CBT course will be a license to ride a "moped", which is defined as up to 50cc and limited to 31mph/50kph, or apparently 28mph/45kph since 2003. Manual or twist-n-go ("scooter") doesn't matter, it'll still be a "ped", so you needn't go putting on airs and graces.

Bear in mind that you'll be riding it for a year, and then if you've got an ounce of sense, you'll sell it and do an A2 test on a 125 and get yourself an A license with a 2 year 25kW restrioction - licensing laws are going to get worse for young riders in January 2013, so don't hang around.

So I'd suggest that you just get whatever's available in your area in your budget. If it's got 2 wheels, goes and stops, it'll get the job done. If you must pick a "theme", then I'd suggest going for the tallest superenduromotardcrosser bike you can find, simple because it'll give better visibility.

What I'd actually suggest though is that you get a pushbike, since buzzing along at 28mph on a ped is just the ride speed to aggravate the hell out of White Van Man and get you ridden off the road. I personally wouldn't ride a motorised vehicle on UK roads that couldn't maintain at least 40mph on the flat. Your life though.

I had a Honda Zoomer whilst I struggled through a scooter phase. About the best 50cc engine on two wheels out there (imo).
