Hi,

Is there alot of difference between the expensive and dirt-cheap 2-stroke oil? (besides the price obviously!)

Ive finally got my SH50 on the road, and have been using it constantly for the past 3 days, its so fun!! Its now time to top up the oil. Its a standard ancient honda engine so is capable of being run on horse piss with soil mixed in, so will expensive oil make a lot of difference?

Also, I have turned the oil supply up as when hot it was really rattly. This has cured the problem but it now smokes heavily when cold. Im not bothered as its clean when hot, would this cause a problem?

Ta

Quality 2-stroke oil is better than cheapo oil no matter what engine you put it in. 2-strokes are marginally lubricated so you should give it the best chance you can.

As for over-oiling - carry spare plugs. It won't hurt your engine but it might foul the plug.

On a low performance 2 stroke motor, expensive oil is a waste of money. I've used cheapo stuff in my RXS for years and had ridiculously high mileages out of components.

Wilko and Tesco 2T is fine.

Well it's not expensive at £70 for a piston & barrel but not exactly pennies either.

This,

The RS/NSR/Mito bikes obviously run with the expensive oil, much higher state of tune engines.

You can try lower quality oil, you might get lucky Mr. Green

I owned a little KH125, which was run on "carlube" 2 stroke oil and never once let me down. Thumbs Up

I agree with Paddy, I use ASDA's own (used to be Carplan...)
pound for pound, it's cheaper than Wilkies and does the same job.

Wilko's has gone up from £1.99 for 600ml to £2.39 in a matter of weeks. But I think it still works out marginally cheaper than both Tesco and Asda. £4.78 for 1.2ltr against £4.20 for Asda and £4.50 for Tesco 1ltr. Saying that, Tesco seems to be quite decent oil, relatively speaking, so that's what I mostly use.

The more expensive oil smokes less.

Not sure if you'll see much difference in reliability with much more expensive oil. Just keep the oil tank topped up !
