Loss of power (SV650)

Hi people

Was riding my SV yesterday, was in 3rd gear giving it a handfull then changed to 4th and the power just went. When I tried to give it some throttle it would just splutter a bit. I didn't get any bad noises or smoke.

It got me home at low revs and generally seems ok (tickover is fine etc). It just revs to about 3-4000 and then starts to splutter.

Any ideas on where to start and what to check will be much appreciated?

Hi,

What year is it? Have you checked obvious things like making sure there's enough oil (I doubt this would be the prbolem)? Checked the fuel filter? Any errors show up on the dash? Any warning lights?

If that happened on a car, I'd suspect the ECU may have gone into "limp home" mode due to not getting information from (e.g.) the lamda sensor.

I'm not suggesting that's what happened to your bike, I'm just floating a balloon. https://forums.sv650.org will be able to give more specific advice.

As above, spark plugs is a good start.

I'd be looking at the fuelling then as a start. If it runs fine low in the revs, something might be stopping it from getting enough fuel for high revs. Fuel filter might be blocked, so I'd replace that. After that is the carbs, so whilst the air box is off (if I recall correctly), check the state of your air filter and then take the carbs off and clean those.

Make sure the airbox is properly connected to the carbs, and check the state of the plugs and leads. I don't reckon that it'd be electrical, given that it's specific to a rev range.

If the airbox is seated properly (you can check by spraying WD40 on the carb rubbers while it's running: if the idle changes speed, then you've got an air leak), then you may want to be looking at cleaning the jets.

If the fuel system is shitted up you could try some Redex fuel system cleaner in there.
